``As the governor says, there's always a lot of smoke but never any fire,'' says Steve Maviglio, Davis' press secretary, commenting on the timing of contributions. Maybe. But when you smell smoke repeatedly, it's not unreasonable to suspect a smoldering problem.

Simon should be HAMMERING Green Davis on this. But where is Simon> Why isn't he standing next to some sludgy Bay Area water full of dead fish with all the press and cameras his campaign can muster? All I've heard is a reference to Mr. Burns on the Simpsons. It's cute, but he needs to start playing hardball and call Davi$ when his ethics come into question.
