The Jackson City Council is considering setting limits on rent increases for elderly tenants after an 80-year-old woman complained her rent jumped from $300 to $600 a month this past May.

"My rent-man has really harassed me," said Carrie Brown of 142 Taylor St. "This house is in bad shape. It's not worth $600."

Ah, my hometown seems bent on destroying itself.

I posted this article b/c of the amazingly idiotic comments which appear in it.
My personal favorite: "My rent-man has really harassed me," said Carrie Brown of 142 Taylor St.
Far be it from me to make fun of "lessor" intellects, so I'll refrain from further commentary for the time being.

"we as a group are opposed to rent control for a host of reasons,"

The foremost being that it is socialism.

Welcome to the USSA.

But she's living outside of her means. If you can't afford something, you shouldn't be there."

She's borrowed money to pay rent for the last few months.

Obviously not a fixed income.

80 year old making $540/month needs to live in a 4 bedroom house why?

"And I cannot have a property rent for less than I pay the mortgage," he said, estimating his mortgage payment is near $400.
Did Mr Waldrop just buy the house that she rents out?

So move. If your assessment of the rental market is correct, you will find a better deal somewhere else.

Our hometown seems bent on destroying itself further. I hope you plan on living outside of town. Madison is actually quite nice....as well as a few other adjacent to the abyss communities.

I have a family thing in Clinton in a few weeks myself.

ATTENTION LANDLORDS: SELL, SELL, SELL!
Sell them under contract. No repairs, same monthy payments(plus interest). Simply cancel the contract and take it back if defaulted on. Plus, it gives people who might not otherwise have a chance to OWN a home a reason to get up and go to work in the morning or at least to mow THEIR lawn. It improves your life and neighborhoods in general.

The Jackson City Council is considering setting limits on rent increases for elderly tenants

Do the foolish pols realize this could cause Jackson City landlords to stop renting to elderly tenants altogether?

Jackson went to hell a long time ago. It's a crying shame too. Used to be a nice town.

Kenneth Stokes is a bumbling buffoon.

As a lifelong NYer, I'll give Jackson some good advice, free of charge.

Don't do it.

That is all.

I was in Jackson 3-4 years ago. That was the first time I ever saw a mall with an 8-12 ft fence all around it and an armed guard at each of the controlled auto entrances/exits. What's going on there?

Jackson's Mayor and City Council are predominately black. The area around the State Capitol sounds like a war zone with the crack of small arms every night. Students at Millsaps College stay holed up in their dormitories at night and do not venture to the periphery of the campus. The more ethnic Jackson becomes, the more dangerous it becomes. This is not racism, it is just fact.

That's the old mall that's been converted into a Medical Mall. The new one has no fence although at the rate that they steal cars and mug people in the parking lot they could use one.

Thanks for the reply.

I looked at your profile: "For the last twenty years, I have been a practicing veterinarian. "

I've been asking a question on FR for the last few days, can my dogs get West Nile Virus?

If you lower the rent on that house to $ 100.00 per month, rent controlled, I'll reconsider my plan to stay in New York.

Despite being born and raised in Jackson, I will likely never live within the city limits. My parents recently moved to Madison and built a house. I may work in Jackson but even that is not a certainty, as many businesses and law firms are moving outside of the city as well.

sad, really sad.
