Federal leaders apparently value criminals more than needed teachers. That’s the inescapable conclusion citizens have to reach when they consider a couple of events that happened last week.

The first event is the forced departure of Loreta Dylgjeri from the United States.

Dylgjeri came to this country legally. She asked for permission to stay longer and was denied. She followed the established legal process and was able to stay in this country nine years before immigration officials forced her to leave.

She spent seven of those years in Spartanburg. She is a specialist in training blind students. Officials with the school said she was an important part of their institution. And they are not sure they can find someone with the training and expertise to replace her.

The school’s pleas were ignored by federal officials. The school would have to do without Dylgjeri. The U.S. government wanted her out of the country.

And so Dylgjeri left.

The second event is the proposal made by House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt for a large-scale amnesty for illegal immigrants. Gephardt believes these people who came to this country illegally and who have spent their time here evading the law should be allowed to stay. He is merely the latest in a string of politicians to propose such an amnesty.

Does this make sense to anyone?

A woman who came here legally and followed the legal process completely is deported, but criminals should be allowed to stay.

A trained specialist who is needed by this community and who may not be able to be replaced must go, but illegal immigrants who often pose great costs on society should be allowed to stay.

Dylgjeri is gone because she obeyed the laws of the United States.

But the illegal immigrants broke our laws and continue to break them by staying here. And now leaders in Washington want to reward them for their criminal behavior by letting them stay in this country permanently.

Loreta Dylgjeri suffers for her obedience to our laws, while illegal immigrants may be rewarded for breaking those same laws. This makes no sense until you realize that proper public policy is not the primary goal in Washington.

Dylgjeri was deported because she does not have a large enough constituency. There were not enough votes behind her to allow her to stay.

Meanwhile, there is a huge lobby for allowing illegal immigrants to stay because they will become citizens and vote for the politicians who approved the amnesty.

In other words, it makes no sense for the country. It makes no sense for this community. And it certainly makes no sense for the blind children at the school who needed Dylgjeri. But it makes sense for the politicians in Washington, and that is all they truly care about.

Thank goodness the INS knew Mohammed Atta and Marwan Al Shehhi where such upstanding young men that it sent their visa renewal notices out after they blew themselves up on 911. Don't ask me why a Loreta Dylgjeri gets treated by the Feds differently than the 911 terrorists or illegal aliens. I guess they have our best interests at heart as a country, y'know and we should trust them to make the right decisions.

Immigration policy has been screwed up ever since Ted Kennedy and LBJ rammed through the 1965 Immigration Act. We don't have a policy anymore, it's all political, and the national interest can take a hike as this story proves.

Polls show that Americans are overwhelming against making illegal aliens citizens but this sure plays to the ears of hispanic and other minority voters.

Exactly. Do you know how much paperwork the pour souls at INS have to go through when someone does that? Much better for the INS when people just enter the country illegally. Then there's no paperwork to worry about.

The Judicial System in America is a scam.It is set up to protect the rich and powerful and to keep the average American in check.Everything is being controlled by lawyers and they make their deals and are rewarded from both ends.Elected officials and lawyers have no ethics and are manipulating a system that was set to bring about protecting those who cant protect themselves and to protect average Americans from tyranny.The ones being protected are the criminals,liars and those who daily are perpetuating a scam on Americans.The system will eventually consume itself and we will be left powerless and in kaos!
