SINGAPORE: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday rejected any linkage between Islam and terrorism and called for addressing the root causes of political violence.
"I would like to right away clear one perception that is going around the world that terrorism is somehow synonymous with our religion Islam," Musharraf said in a recorded speech opening a global media industry conference here.
"Nothing could be farther from the truth," he told participants at the News World Asia meeting led by the world's top broadcasting networks.
Musharraf, who has played a pivotal role in Washington's anti-terrorrist campaign centered on Afghanistan following last September's attacks in the US, said political disputes were ultimately behind terrorism.
"The real way of addressing and uprooting terrorism in its entirety is to get to the root of the tree, and where does this root of this tree lie?" the Pakistani leader said.
"The root of this tree lies in all the political disputes going around the world and these political disputes involve injustices, which cause a sense of deprivation, a sense of powerlessness, a sense of hopelessness," he said.
Throw in the poverty experienced by those affected by political disputes and all "this then leads to extreme acts of terrorism," Musharraf said.
"So I personally feel that if we are to address the issue of terrorism, we must address... get to the root of the tree... resolve political disputes around the world," he said, listing the conflicts in Kashmir and Palestine as the "two major disputes" in the world.
According to Musharraf, the terrorists who carried out the atrocities on September 11 last year in the US were not motivated by religion.
"If we analyse the criminals of the terrorist attacks of 11 September... not one of them was religiously motivated," Musharraf said.
"We know for a fact that all of them enjoyed themselves in a pub or a bar the previous evening and then went in for this terrorist attack. That was certainly not a religious act," he said.
"Basically, it was a political cause which led them to this extreme act of taking their own lives and perpetrating misery on innocent people from all over the world which was most condemnable," he maintained.
The Marines could not reason with the kamikazes , they had to kill them to stop the madness. Same principle, different day.
I always get the impression that he fills this role rather reluctantly.
"We know for a fact that all of them enjoyed themselves in a pub or a bar the previous evening and then went in for this terrorist attack. That was certainly not a religious act," he said.
Well, when the mice are away from the cat, they play!
Throw in the poverty experienced by those affected by political disputes and all "this then leads to extreme acts of terrorism," Musharraf said.
No, Musharraf.
The "root cause" of terrorism is terrorists. Get rid of them, and hey presto no terrorism.
This is garbage, this blather of powerlessness, hopelessness and deprivation.
The Palestinian bombers are filled--not with powerlessness--but hatred for Jews.
If Palestinians were motivated by their poverty, they'd kill Arafat in his bed and use his head for a soccer ball.
They are motivated by their madness to kill all the Jews.
There is no "sensible solution" to terrorism--
Terrorism does not deal with sense--only senselessness.
To end terrorism, kill all the terrorists.
Musharraf has a head full of mush. He is the current head of the horde. And must sense his own mortality.
After all, his own intelligence service created the Taliban, and is as intertwined with it and the al Qaeda as a clay sewer pipe filled with elm roots.
The time is coming VERY SOON when not even the most deluded liberal, the most convinced mulitculturalist, or the most pacifist peacenik, will believe that great BIG muslim lie!!!!
The attack on Hebrew University, with all those foreign students among the killed and wounded, will go a long way to bring that day closer!!!!
The "root cause" of terrorism is NOT poverty or some such malarkey. The REAL root cause is the hideous ideology that islam is destined by Allah to rule the world, and the fact that islamofascists have a strategy (of which terrorism is just one part) that just might make that happen!!!!
Well, now that you mention it ... you make an excellent point. Musharraf may actually be trying -- in the local idiom -- to split off the mainstream, quasi-middle class muslims from such as Al-Queda.
I shall put in abbeyance my 'Hold Ma Beer' alert in light of this interesting idea.
You mean W is about to wake up and smell the coffee? It would be nice, but I'll wait and see.
