Pot smoking rampant amongst IT workers and teachers.
The BBC ^

Posted on 08/01/2002 4:44:17 PM PDT by lilburne

A survey about cannabis use has found that people who work in the technology industry are the most likely to have tried the drug.

The results reveal that almost a third of those who admitted they had tried cannabis worked in the technology and telecommunications industries.

Overall the survey found that 72% of those questioned admitted that they had tried the drug at one time or another.

Apparently 92% of IT workers admitted to pot smoking and 79% of those working in finance. Is it any wonder that commonsense seems to have flown out the window at WorldCom and Time-Warner?

However, the most frequent users were teachers of whom 22% questioned admitted to taking pot on a daily basis.

Whilst being a British survey I wonder if there is a similar correlation here. You'ld think so the way some school boards behave.

Churchill once said:

The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.
If the smartest have now turned to drugs perhaps John Walters is right to question their right to vote!

Well this explains why none of my computer programs work like they should!

"had tried the drug at one time or another." I wonder how many presidents, past and present, who came of age during or after the 60's have tried marijuana "at one time or another". How about cocaine?

"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others."

Uh, those weren't IT people that did the books. Those were lawyers and accountants.

As a former computer science/engineering student, I can attest to the fact that one must be "high as a kite" in order to make heads or tails of some of those 'logic' circuits and Java/C++ program assignments...

Big deal- many of these same people might consume alcohol on a daily basis. As long as they do their jobs, who cares what they do in their off hours?

As a graduate computer science/engineering student (MSEE/CS), I can attest to the fact that some do not need to be "high as a kite" in order to make heads or tails of some of those 'logic' circuits

and Java/C++ program assignments... Include APL and LISP and I'll agree with you.

I was floored, years post-graduation, to run into the dorm's stoner (I rarely saw him straight) and learn that he'd gone from liberal arts to being a programmer at Intel.

that seems awfully high ... (ahem) ... been in I/T 18 years ... never have even tried the stuff ... and neither did a lot of my coworkers, I'm pretty sure ... was the poll conducted only at Berkeley?

The headline on the article is: The weed and the web. This article only says that 92% have tried it. Not that they currently smoke it now. If teachers are highest (pun intended) at 22% daily use, then IT must be below that. Hardly rampant in my book. And you forgot the pic, silly.

No one cares what you get up to on your off hours but the affects of cannabis can last more than 24 hours. Unless imbibed during the weekend that takes the drug abuse into the office, classroom, and boardroom.
