[history]
Reps. Bob Barr and John Linder will know by nightfall on Aug. 20 which one of them will not return to Congress next year.
The two conservatives are running against each other for the Republican nomination in Georgia's newly drawn 7th Congressional District. The district is heavily Republican, so the winner of the primary is all but assured re-election to the House. The loser will look for other work.

Mr. Linder has received endorsements from some leading House Republicans, including California Rep. David Dreier, the House Rules Committee chairman; Ohio Rep. John A. Boehner, chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce; and California Rep. Bill Thomas, House Ways and Means Committee chairman

Mr. Barr said that the issue in the primary is leadership and that Mr. Linder "has been in Congress 10 years and has only two bills passed with his name on them. Contrast that with the way I moved impeachment forward. I introduced [an impeachment inquiry] in November of 1997, based on corruption in the Clinton administration, not on Monica Lewinsky."
"Linder eventually voted for impeachment," Mr. Barr said. "But the difference in approach is that I worked at the grass-roots level to mobilize popular support for the impeachment and forced the issue to the forefront, so the leadership in Washington could not ignore it."

Wasn't Linder at one time 1996? the House Congressional Campaign Committee chairman? Same role now held by Tom Davis? If so, its amazing he's raised less than $1 million.

Linder campaign manager Bo Harmon says his candidate "is lower-keyed and builds a consensus. Bob Barr positions himself as a spokesman for conservative causes." "Builds a consensus". Ugh, sounds like Trent Lott. I don't like him already.
And was the second part of that quote about Barr supposed to be a negative? Yeah Bo, we sure wouldn't want anyone to speak up for conservative causes now would we? Help...

Bob Barr's local tv commercial is a hoot! Brit Hume showed it tonight at the end of his show, but believe me, it funnier everytime it's shown here in metro Atlanta.
"Linder's good, but Barr's gooder"

I didn't like it when McCain used this tactic, cross over votes, and I don't like it now. The dems have decided which man is easier to beat in the general election. When will we ever close the primaries?

Wasn't Drier one of the impeachment managers? If so, I'm surprised he endorsed Linder. The two from Calif were Rogen and Drier? And where is Rogen these days?

Agreed. Was following the TN election on another thread and noted that TN has open primaries too. Here in Oregon primaries ARE closed. Unfortunately, if you are registered Independent, I don't think you get to vote. Interesting system.

I believe Rogan was the only Impeachment Manager from California. I don't know where he is now.

Who gives a damn? How has the Republican Party, since getting a congressional majority in 1994, improved the country?
Do we have more freedom, or less?
Is government bigger, or smaller?
Is government more, much more, expensive, or even a dime cheaper?
Is there any Republican attack on DemocRAT policies and spending, or are they happy to go along like scared little girls rather than fight hard?
There's not a damned difference between the Republicrats and the Demopublicans - they want power and they want our money. Period.

Yeah AYN RAND FOR PRESIDENT!

Thanks...it's old age I think...lol. I can see David Drier in my mind...from SOME big issue. And I remember thinking at the time he seemed like he would have a real future in the GOP. I'll remember long about 3:00 a.m. Sigh.

Here's Barr's site:
Congressman Bob Barr - Georgia's 7th District
I have supported him ever since "The inquiry into drafting letters of impeachment," which came before impeachment, and which he led.
As I have always found, I do not agree with him 100%, but he's a strong defender of civil liberties and the Constitution, and a good man.
I will be voting for him, for whatever that's worth.

Blah, blah, blah,blah ....................
If yopu can't see the difference ... get a seeingeye dog.
If you think that things would remain the same, if Barr amd other staunch / good men are eliminated ; think again.
If you want to see the 1/2 filled glass as perpetually empty , then complain someplace else.

Although I was not a fan of Bob Barr in the past, he hasearned my respect in recent months as the strongest defender of civilliberties in the United StatesAre you talking about the same Bob Barr who tried
to pass a law striking down legitimate petitions from
making it onto the ballot and hence, putting the issue
up for the voters to decide? That's the opposite of
a defender of liberty where I come from.

That was only for D.C. The Founding Fathers rightly gave the power to run D.C. to Congress. They knew that the seat of government would be populated with the bottom feeders of society who live off government. That is why the Founders didn't give D.C. residents the vote.
Under the politically correct bastardized system now in place they have turned D.C. into a toilet. Barr simply worked to keep it from getting worse. If Congress had any balls there would be no local government in D.C. and there would be no Eleanor Holmes Norton polluting Congress. Barr is absolutely right on this subject, as he is on about 98% of the subjects that come before Congress.

Hmmmm . . . I see dodging and weaving - not attempting to answer
any of the questions I posed.
Just like a Republican. "Everything'll be just dandy if you keep reelecting us and don't worry about what we do once in power. And get your wallet out, peasant."
Not good enough. Not even close.
