GREENSBORO, NC -- Lawyers for the University of North Carolina are asking a judge to dismiss from a lawsuit five people who claim a requirement for new students to read a book on Islam violates their First Amendment rights.

The suit was filed last month by a Christian organization, the American Family Association Center for Law & Policy, on behalf of three unnamed students and two taxpayers.

In fact, it sounds downright interesting; I may try to find a copy for myself.

Amazon often does deals where you can get too similar items at a discounted price. Maybe they have "Approaching Mein Kampf" as a twofer with this book. Knock yourself out.

Wasn't aware of this, Ron. I think that Qatar is likely to offer be a basing facility if and when we go into Iraq. However, I definitely see your point.

And it's not racism, but a well-founded fear of a group of people out to kill a lot of us.

Odd recommendation coming from someone who seems likely never to have cracked a copy of the Qur'an or Mein Kampf. Where did you say you were educated?

Please be sure to send an email to Dennis Rogers at the N&O while you're at it -- he's ashamed that a UNC grad would challege this in court.

I wouldn't be opposed to reading Mein Kampf -- as an insight to the political theories of a mad man. Context is everything.

Good Lord, man, did you even read your own post: "Although the summer reading IS required, . . ." You may want to consult BJ Clintoon regarding the meaning of "is."

But more to the point, you are woefully uninformed. "Approaching the Qur'án: The Early Revelations, translated and introduced by Michael Sells, consists of thirty-five suras, or short passages from the chief holy book of Islam, . . ." What the UNC pointy heads are NOT telling you is that these are NOT the suras that teach Muslims that Christians are their enemies and that you should beat your wife if she needs it. This is the equivolent of being forced to read a book titled "Approaching the Bible: the Book of Revelations" by Jerry Falwell and being told that this will help you to understand Christians. It's complete and utter BS and a blatant attempt to brainwash students!!!

Context is everything.

That's true.
However, I must admit I've had a bit of 'Hitler fatigue'.

Watching hours of the Hitler... I mean... the History Channel and having once read (most of) the massive The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich will do that.

Yeah, that's the one with Gregory Peck, right?

It's been a while, but I saw it on AMC once.

That's it. Little Hitlers everywhere. One grew up to become governor of NC.

Good Lord, man, did you even read your own post...

Good Lord yourself. Did you bother to read to the end of the sentence? "...if any students or their families are opposed to reading parts of the Qur'án because to do so is offensive to their own faith, they may choose not to read the book."

Not having read the book, I'm not in a position to pontificate about it's being "utter BS and a blatant attempt to brainwash students." I doubt that you are, either. If you have read it and simply sincerely disagree with Sells' choice of important Suras, I apologize for my presumption. In that case, you might consider writing a book, yourself.

If you want further to research "wife-beating" and ill-treatment of "enemies" in the context of religious scripture, I might refer you to the Bible, which seemingly approves of both, even recommending gleefully dashing babies of nonbelieving enemies against rocks. But I wonder, would you consider inclusion of such verses important in a course on foundations of Christianity?

Bwahahaha!
I can just picture him in a Hitler mustache saying "Four-year-olds don't have but one chance to be 4."

Yes, I did read the whole thing -- which is why I made the statement. The words themselves say "IS required." And even with their exception you are forced to defend yourself by submitting a composition as to WHY you don't think you should have to ready it. Oh, you didn't know that? You see, the meaning of is is ......

Nice try with the Bible is evil bit, but you forget, I'm not advocating that it -- or a book about it -- be mandatory reading. They are forcing this book down their the kids throats. I would, however, think that it might help to have them read the Bible to gain a better appreciation as to why Muslins and liberals hate Christians.

Why does UNC want these students to shed their anonymity? Seems they wanto to intimidate them.

The whole thing stinks of intimidation! Sounds like anyone who opts out of reading that piece of propaganda is going to be intimidated in these so called "discussion groups."

Dare I hope that the incoming freshmen who read the book will tell their professor what a piece of crap it is?
