Lieberman Can't Recall Citigroup Contributions

Senate Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joseph Lieberman said Friday that he couldn't remember the exact amount of campaign cash he'd accepted over the years from Citigroup, whose chairman Robert Rubin he has yet to call to testify before his Enrongate probe.

During an interview with radio host Don Imus, the Connecticut Democrat acknowledged accepting $2,000 in contributions from Enron, prompting this exchange:

IMUS: Well, what did you get from Citigroup?

LIEBERMAN: More, but I couldn't tell you the amount.

IMUS: Was it, like, $10,000?

LIEBERMAN: Ah - I honestly don't know. I'd say it was....

IMUS: How about a million?

LIEBERMAN: Oh, no. It was definitely somewhere between $10,000 and.....

IMUS: Was it a million and a babe?

LIEBERMAN: (Laughing) A million and naming rights for some building here on my compound. (End of Excerpt)

In fact, over the past six years, Citigroup gave Lieberman $59,256, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The hefty sum makes Robert Rubin's firm by far the single largest contributor to the Connecticut Democrat's campaign coffers since 1996.

Asked whether Rubin will be appearing before his committee, Lieberman said he hadn't made a final decision. "My intention is to end these hearings in September or October," he told Imus, indicating that if Rubin was called it would be before the November election.

When pressed on why he refused to commit to calling Rubin, Lieberman protested, "Hey, this is not political."

The response prompted audible guffaws from Imus and his crew.

HOW TO READ THIS CHART: This chart lists the top donors to each this member of Congress during the current election cycle. The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organization's PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.

Typically, members of Congress draw their contributions from two main sources: PACs and lobbyists who give because of the member's position on key congressional committees, and local companies, unions and other organizations from their home district. Challengers tend to rely more heavily on home-state donors, since most PACs put most of their dollars behind incumbents.

METHODOLOGY: The organizations listed here came from two sources: either they were the sponsor of a PAC that donated to the member, or they were listed as individual donor's employer. Donors who give more than $200 must provide information on their occupation and employer.

In cases where two or more people from the same family contributed, the income-earner's occupation/employer is assigned to all family members. If, for instance, Henry Jones lists his employer as First National Bank, his wife Matilda lists "Homemaker" and 12-year old Tammy shows up as "Student," the Center would identify all their contributions as being related to the "First National Bank" since that's the source of the family's income.

NOTE: All the numbers on this page are for the 1997-2002 Senate election cycle and based on Federal Election Commission data released electronically on Monday, June 03, 2002. Help! The numbers don't add up...")

Citigroup, funding spineless liars everywhere.

Citigroup, setting up offshore shell accounts for drug runners, corporate fraud artists and who knows who else.

Citigroup, parent of Salmon Barney Frank. They must be so proud.

Now that the shell accounts are illegal, just how will Joe get all those undisclosed funds? Hyperbole, of course.

VIA FACSIMILE

January 15, 2002

Senator Joseph Lieberman
Chairman
Senate Governmental Affairs Committee
340 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Lieberman:

I am writing to ask you to recuse yourself from any participation in the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee's upcoming hearing and consideration of the Enron case.

Last Thursday, Attorney General Ashcroft recused himself from the Enron case the same day he received a letter from Rep. Henry Waxman in which Waxman questioned the approximately $50,000 that had gone to committees affiliated with Ashcroft by Enron-related individuals and groups.

As you know, the amount that you and committees affiliated with you received from Enron interests, Enron's top creditor - Citigroup, Inc. and Enron's auditor, Arthur Anderson, dwarfed anything received by Attorney General Ashcroft.

Enron contributed at total of $25,000 in 2000 to the group you founded, the New Democrat Network, according to IRS records. Also, Enron's biggest creditor, Citigroup, Inc. is listed as your largest single contributor ($112,546) for the period 1997-2002 by the web site Opensecrets.org, relying on Federal Election Commission records. Citigroup, Inc. also made $100,000 in contributions to the New Democrat Network in 2001. Arthur Andersen, Enron's auditing firm, contributed $20,000 to the New Democrat Network in 2001.

In order to assure the public of the integrity of the Senate investigation and to avoid the appearance of a double standard, I hope you agree with me that recusing yourself is the only appropriate step for you to take.

Sincerely,

Peter Flaherty
President

cc: Rep. Henry Waxman

That's a lousy thing to say! You should be ashamed of yourself!

What does being Jewish have to do with your argument? Find me any liberal that isn't a liar? But you had to take a shot.

That has to be one of the most despicably anti-Semitic things I have ever heard in my life. Amazing...what a creep!

"Citigroup gave Lieberman $59,256 for his Senate campaign.

How much did they give for his and Gore's Presidential campaign?

Joe must be thinking - "If only the US Supreme Court had agreed with the Florida Supreme Court, who the hell would care how much Citicorp and Enron gave the democrats?"
