I like Traficant too, but it seems pretty clear to me that he is in fact guilty of the various bribery and kick-back schemes that he was charged with.

Yeah, he had all that "impeccable" testismony against him made by those witnesses who were acting as good citizens and not because they could get their own sentences (such as for perjury) reduced or to keep from having the book thrown at them in the future.

If you watch the videos of the Ethics Committee hearings on C-Span’s website, you will see that the government’s charges were nothing but hearsay. There was not even one charge that had any physical evidence; no video tapes, no audio tapes, no fingerprints, and no witnesses to back up the hearsay evidence that was used against Traficant.

Traficant had hard evidence to dispute each and every charge; receipts, transcripts, tapes of phone calls, contracts, and numerous witnesses, though few witnesses were allowed, either in court or in the Ethics hearings. Pay particular attention to Richard Detore’s testimony on the 16th.

Traficant said that the Justice Department, FBI, and IRS conspired to frame him in order to stop his fight against their abuses, and as revenge for what he had already done. I believe that Traficant proved his point, and that he is innocent of all the crimes he was charged with.
