"Communism no longer exists as a functioning ideology"

I guess he has never heard of China, North Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam, Cuba, etc.

But Steve, you forgot Berkeley, Boston, Amhurst, NY City,, Detroit, Philedelphia, St Louis, San Francisco, and Washington, DC.

Goldstein's simple explanation for this hypocritical invasion of privacy went something like this: Sullivan is Republican. Republicans are evil. They must be stopped by all means necessary. Progressives, faux environmentalists and, yes, communists, all justify all their actions with this basic formula....

Yes.

Add the NY Times and Wash Post to that list of biased reporting.

But the national press corpse of ABCNNBCBS isn't far behind his socialistic ranting either.

Commies only say that so you won't reveal their discredited and murderous plans.

If it acts like a commie and talks like a commie and walks like a commie and believes like a commie and votes for communist ideals......

The only reason Goldstein isn't a self-confessed communist is that he refuses to take his political and cultural values to their logical conclusion. These leftists not only want to expropriate accumulated wealth, but want to impose a tyrannical government to enforce their view of behavior and "values." Andrew Sullivan is a real thorn in their side. I hope he practices his 2nd Amendment rights.

Right.

I'm not a commie, I'm a progressive, and I believe in progressive ideals. Things like a centrally planned economy, and a siezure of the means of production by the proletariat, and taking from each according to his ability and giving to each according to his need. But I'm not a commie.

According to Goldstein, Communism no longer exists as a functioning ideology, only as a vicious slur employed by cowardly, red-baiting conservatives, seeking to marginalize left-wing thinkers that possess "certain concepts of social justice."

This diatribe is what one expects from a Commie.

Which is nevertheless the de facto ideology of university political science departments.

Oddly enough, I disagree - it is, however, the de facto ideology of the literature and ethnic studies departments, though...

Goldstein is not really a product of suburban bourgeoise parents. He went to Hunter College the same time I did(I left to join the service)and I recall him as a scruffy little piglike individual who wrote left wing screeds for the campus paper and demonstrated against the war.He later became a "rock critic"whatever that is.I never knew he was a faggot in school, but it isn't surprising. The school was not a total waste-it graduated Thomas P.Noonan Jr.who received the Medal of Honor posthumously in Vietnam. He never got the chance to go on and write articles-he was too busy laying down his life trying to save others.

I used to think Communism was dead as an ideology in the West. But it stands to reason that, as people forget the horrors perpetrated by Lenin, Stalin, Mao and other Communist leaders, some of them will "rediscover" it. You can see this at Harper's Magazine or The Baffler or in academia with Derrida, Zizek or Hardt and Negri.

Basically, the better capitalism works at producing the goods, the more likely it is that in time some will say that Utopia is just around the corner, if only we do away with private property. It's not true of course, but it satisfies a demand in some people for a religion, a sense of righteousness, a purpose. Neo-communism is so much a part of consumer culture and the freedom provided by advanced capitalism, but it gives people the feeling that they are "transcending" capitalism.

Behind it, too, is what drove middle and upper class socialists of the last century: the feeling that our privileges will be lost, unless we can get on the socialist wagon that is going to run down bourgeois culture. I suspect that capitalism is more likely to run over the old bourgeois culture, but those on the left are convinced that America's day will soon be done and they will have to join the coming order in order to preserve something of their privileges.
