Israeli police yesterday look over a shredded car where a bungling bomber accidentally set off his explosive belt, killing himself and injuring the driver with whom he'd hitched a ride.

August 6, 2002 -- JERUSALEM - Israeli forces foiled two terrorist attacks yesterday, tightened restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and arrested the "dispatcher" of the homicide bus bomber who killed nine people Sunday, authorities said.

Authorities said Avital Volansky, 27, and her husband, Avi, 29, were fatally ambushed while driving Sunday night to their settlement of Eli. The couple's 3-year-old son and 8-month-old baby were wounded in the attack.

They said the unidentified man was apparently trying to reach the Israeli town of Afula to carry out his attack and had gotten a ride with an Israeli Arab from Nazareth.
