Years ago, I read a book called The Survival Retreat by Ragnar Benson. The one piece of advice that stuck in my head forever after reading this book is this:

The important lesson you can learn from this book is never, under any circumstances, ever become a refugee...Refugees are people without hope who have left their homes to run ahead of the holocaust, never in control of their own destinies. They are people who must rely on the charity of others until their time runs out and they die...Die if you must, but die on your home turf with your face to the wind, not in some stinking hellhole 2000 kilometers away, among people you neither know nor care about.
