The original was written to be sung slowly. It was also written by a black man. One night when is was being performed, a fire broke out backstage and the band was playing Dixie and to help get people out faster they picked up the tempo of the song to the way that most people now it today to aid in getting people out safely. That's the story that my Momma use to tell us about it!

Well, I'm still holding out hope that loddy or scuttle will find 'that' rendition of the song.

That's "Dixie", Scuttlebutt, slow with words, preferably sung by a male chorus. :)
