Guard Attacked at U.S. Facility in Cyprus

Thu Aug 1, 5:11 AM ET

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Police in Cyprus were investigating a knife attack on a guard at a U.S. monitoring station in the capital Nicosia on Thursday, a spokesman said.

The Cypriot guard, 63, told police he was attacked while on foot patrol at a perimeter wall of the facility before dawn.

"The guard said he was attacked by two strangers, possibly of Arab origin, with a knife. They inflicted scratch injuries to his stomach and hands," a police spokesman told Reuters.

"We are investigating the claims," he said.

The well-guarded compound is run by the U.S. government-funded Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) which monitors media worldwide for the government.

The U.S. embassy in Nicosia declined to comment, saying it was standard practice not to comment on security issues.

Several months ago people at the facility reported that an unknown intruder attempted to scale the wall of the compound with a ladder, but later disappeared.

Greek Christian Cypriots have been living with Turkish Muslim terrorism for many many years. They lost a third of their terrotory to the hordes of Muslim invaders in 1973. Hopefully, they will deal efficiently with this pack of scum as well.
