House Majority Leader warns against unprovoked attack on Iraq Thurs Aug 8 2002 16:30:05 ET

House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) addressed an Iowa crowd on Thursday and raised questions about whether he would support an American war against Iraq and Saddam Hussein.

"My own view would be to let [Saddam] bluster, let him rant and rave all he wants and let that be a matter between he and his own country. As long as he behaves himself within his own borders, we should not be addressing any attack or resources against him.'

"If we try to act against Saddam Hussein, as obnoxious as he is, with proper provocation, we will not have the support of other nation states who might do so."

"He has a right to hold dominion within his own national boundaries, as obnoxious as he is and as comical as he can be."

Should France and England have declared war against Hitler in 1936 when he marched into the Rhineland in violation of the Versailles Treaty or have waited until 1939 when he attacked Poland?

"I still think that right around the time the bombs start falling we'll see a whole bunch of documentation of how complicit Saddam was in 9/11 and/or the subsequent anthrax attacks."

That's what I'm hoping but, it seems the 'making of the case' for attacking Saddam should be underway already.

No more waiting around to get kicked in the nuts for me.

No beating around the bush - short, sweet, and to the point.

Armey is just trying to throw Saddam off regarding the US's real intentions.

The making of the case has already started. Rumsfeld talked about this in a press conference. The White House confirmed the contact between Atta and the Iraqi agent in Prague. CNN is detailing his behavior. The UN says that his overtures on the inspection were not helpful.

I believe you will see more of this in the next few days, eventually culminating in a speech, as the bombs fall.

If Armey is saying that we shouldn't attack without provocation, you can bet your bottom dollar that we have the goods on Saddam and Armey knows it.

No problem. Let's go kick ass and take names. We'll make Iraq the 51st state and who knows which one will be next. We'll just have to see what the rest of the ...'n world has to say about it (can it be worse than what they're sayin' now?).

I can agree with that option at this time too. IMHO, domination is still reasonable at this time.

Make up your mind one way or the other. You gettin' wishy-washy here?

What's the big deal about having weapons of mass destruction? Only one country in the world has ever used such weapons against civilians, women, and children. That country is, of course, the good ole USA!

It's so weird after September 11, lots of pundits blamed and rightfully so in many cases, the previous Clinton Administration for not doing anything in the eight years about bin Laden and his gang of murdering terrorists. When we found out that Clinton had 3 opportunities to actually capture this demon, he didn't do a damn thing about it.

OK, move forward to the Bush presidency and he has never been obscure about his intentions, ever since he took to the campaign trail that lead him to the Oval Office, to take out one the most despicable bloodthirsty tyrannical despotic dictator the world has had the displeasure of having to live with. And, why must decent peace loving people be constantly threatened by this madman?

Do we want to hear a the same criticisms that are weighed against Clinton's lack of interest in taking out bin laden? How many lives could have been saved on 9-11 if Clinton did?

Are you by any chance a blonde? 'WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST A PERSON WITH AN UNPOPULAR POINT OF VIEW POSTING ON THE FREE REPUBLIC? AND....THAT HE SHOULD REALIZE THAT EVERYONE HAS THEIR 1ST AMENDMENT RIGHTS....GET IT? THINK REAL HARD ABOUT IT BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T GET IT, YOU HAD BETTER ASK SOMEONE ELSE TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOU BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ANY MORE TIME. O'TAY?

You are using 'SHOUTING' and personal attacks to attempt to communicate. Why?

It MIGHT be my failure to adequately explain my point....or it might be YOUR failure to understand, no?

One cannot assert that the poster here has 1st Amendment rights AT FREE REPUBLIC.

Read your underlined post above.

The act of shouting...asking if a person is blonde...telling someone to get something explained to them, does NOTHING to further communication. What it DOES do, is get the person who is calling names, shouting, etc. off on another 'tact' and thus they don't have to respond. I, personally, am sick of such tactics.

You bet I'm provoked. What do these mentally challenged anti-war people think will happen? If we are nice to Saddam he will leave us alone? That he won't be the first to sneak a nuke past our sleeping border? Gad, I'm stunned by the stupidity.

The surrender agreement required arms inspections, if he had nothing to hide why did he not honor the agreement he signed? He's busy as a little hornet over there with dreams of World ruler dancing through his clown mind like sugar plumb fairies, it's past time to get out the fly swatter.

By having armey come out with this

It's like an innoculation against a spreading disease. Good thought and I hope you're correct.
