I ordered a whiskey and ginger once in Denver.I was thinking Rye whiskey. The bartender looked at me like I was nuts,,and poured me a Bourbon and ginger:)

Next time, try ordering a "highball." The older bartenders will know what you mean. As for ordering "rye," most US bartenders will think you're ordering a sandwich.
