Israel Deploys Arrow Missiles Against Iraqi Threat

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel is building a second state-of-the-art anti-missile battery in the center of the country to fend off Iraqi attacks in the event of a U.S. assault on Baghdad, Israeli military sources said on Friday.

The Arrow-2 system, developed by Israel in conjunction with its guardian ally the United States, was first deployed over the past three years in the southern Negev desert, the sources said.

The Israeli army said a new battery about six miles from the central town of Hadera was "for training purposes," but the sources said it already had operational capability.

A possible U.S. attack on Iraq as part of Washington's "war on terrorism" declared after the September 11 suicide hijackings, and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's defiant public statements, have heightened Israeli concerns over a repeat of the 1991 Gulf War, when Iraqi Scud missiles rained on the Jewish state.

"We must be prepared at all times to deal with the threat that we face from the east, the Iraqi threat," Israeli cabinet minister Matan Vilnai, an ex-deputy chief of staff, told Army Radio.

U.S.-made Patriot anti-missile systems deployed near Israeli towns intercepted some of the Scuds in 1991, but at least 30 of the Iraqi surface-to-surface missiles got through, killing one person and causing significant damage.

Those Scuds had conventional explosive warheads, but according to Israeli officials the Scuds Iraq has left could this time be fired with chemical or biological payloads.

Arrow-2 missiles can fly at nine times the speed of sound to intercept hostile warheads as far as 30 miles away from their targets, according to a report by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying group.

"The situation now is that he (Saddam) has a few isolated missiles -- if any -- and therefore the effect of the Arrow is greater," Dan Shomron, Israel's chief of staff during the Gulf War, told Israel Radio.

A military source told Reuters the Arrow system was being constantly upgraded to improve its "fighting systems and mode of action."

President Bush has been hearing proposals from defense officials for possible military action to achieve a "regime change" in Iraq over Baghdad's refusal to readmit U.N. weapons inspectors.

Bush said on Wednesday he had not ruled out a diplomatic solution and Vice President Dick Cheney said Washington would seek an international consensus on any steps. Major U.S. allies oppose military action, fearing for Middle East stability.

this story looks like part of the campaign to ratchet up the psychological preasure on Iraq.... to paint the picture to the military in particualr that they are going to lose and lose big if the stuff ever flies, and hinting that maybe that should do something to assure it doesn't.

Deployment of this system is clearly a precursor to an attack against Iraq.

Personally I don't remember 30 scuds getting through to Israel as mentioned in the article.

From what I heard today, the speed of this model allows it to get high enough fast enough in order to stop incoming missiles far up into the atmosphere, thereby neutralizing chemical warheads rather than having them rain down on the population. That's a big advancement.

***** *****

I don't know how many got through but it was a bunch. South Tel Aviv looked almost as bad as Newark. The best one though was when a SCUD landed among a bunch of Palestinians who were cheering TV reports of the SCUDs hitting Tel Aviv.

That's been a few years back, but I was a newespaperman covering the war then, and as I recall the total number that hit was 39. There may have been others launched that never arrived in Israeli territory, and some were targeted elsewhere, of course.

It depends on what the meaning of "getting through" is. Quite a few warheads managed to land inside Israel although the patriot system managed to "hit" the missile. As I understand it, one of the many (and necessary) upgrades was targetting on the warhead rather than the propulsion.

Obviously being able to fly at mach 9 and hit a target 30 miles ahead of its intended target addresses that concern (as long as the warhead is destroyed)

Oooh, such a stable and civilized part of the world. We wouldn't want to go and make it all UNSTABLE now, would we. Sheer Idiocy.

BTW- 39 Scuds were launched against Israel. The Arab world is all excited about "The 40th Missile" and who will launch it and what its payload will be. If it's chem or bio, goodbye Iraq. Glassland.

Israeli intelligence is the best in the world. They are able to infiltrate where most of the world cannot.

If they are aware of a legitimate planned attack by "unconventional" weapons, Israel WILL do WHATEVER it takes to survive - restraint be damned!

Which will cause Saddam's bio-dust to drop all over the Palestinian cities.
