Certain large states pay out far more to the federal government than they could ever hope to get back. Some of those funds help to pay for smaller states expenses. I would submit that the loss of the state you hate with a passion would cost your state tens of millions of dollars each year, if your state is smaller. Number one, your state wouldn't have tax dollars from California to draw from. And number two, you'd have to chip in to help the other states that would also lose funds because California was gone.
California may be a pain in the patute, but it has the number one, two and three largest dollar volume ports. If I'm not mistake those ports are in Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Francisco. California would be the 5th largest economy in world if it left the union. Do you really want to give that away to anyone?

California is not a net provider in the tax roles. The US govt spends more money in California than California sends to Washington. Has been the case for a very long time.
Massachusetts is another egg-suckin' state. The US could profitably get along without either.
