If the economy is slow, if the war goes badly or haltingly in a non decisive way, she has a good shot. And if she won, it would tear this country apart in ways we can't even appreciate. It would be the worst thing the republic has ever seen.

It would be the most divisive presidency that America would have ever experienced. I can imagine sane states like Texas, North Carolina, et al, might contemplate seceeding.

And this time the South would win. ;)

Well, I don't think there's anything Hillary can do to distance herself from Bill, being husband and wife. I think her best strategy would not be to run away from the record, but to embrace it, thus neutralizing it. "Sure that happened, for the good of America!"... that type of deal.

As for what she'll run on, I'll tell you what she'll run on - the first woman president. Half of eligible U.S. voters do not vote, and half of them are women. I will bet a dollar that the prospect of the first female chief executive - regardless of the specifics of her politics - will draw droves of those untapped voters. The Republicans will have to work to counter that.

A whole lot of women hate Hillary. It doesn't matter that she would be the first woman president. It is these apolitical women who would need to be energized by the Republicans, and could be encouraged to vote against Hillary.

The women who like Hillary are those who are already energized politically, who think that they can use Hillary to further their agenda.

In the early 1990s I heard Dick Cheney give a speech on national defense. He had positive things to say about all of the Republican Presidents of the preceding quarter-century. As I recall there was one minor positive thing to say about the Carter years but he gave the credit for that to Harold Brown rather than to Jimmy Carter.
