Democratic Party Ethicist-Terry McAuliffe seems to have forgotten his $18 million windfall.

Who does Democratic National Chairman Terry McAuliffe think he is? Bill Clinton?

Only a man of Mr. Clinton's, er, self-confidence, could believe that he could get away with what Mr. McAuliffe is trying, to lead his party's charge against President Bush on the issue of business ethics. In the sermon he delivered to the Democratic National Committee summer meeting in Las Vegas Saturday, Mr. McAuliffe was so busy attacking the President for manipulating markets and exploiting September 11 that somehow he never mentioned the words Global Crossing.

Just one time I would like to see the NYT or Washington Post run an editorial like this. Perhaps some unctuous reporter like Bill "burp" Moyers or Bob Schieffer would comment on the sleaze of McAuliffe.

People like McAuliffe get away with such hypocrisy because they KNOW the mainstream media is fully behind them. I despise them all!

This is probably wistful thinking, but dare we hope the Republicans will make a little hay over this?

I don't know, but on the face of it, the "I bought some stock and I sold some stock" explanation would seem to be enough to reassure the flock.

But the real question becomes "How many people were afforded the opportunity to purchase the stock at such a low level?" My guess is not too many. What really gets me is that Terry McAuliffe is the embodiment of what the Left claims the Republican Party is all about. A rich lout who gamed the system for his own personal gain. And yet nobody seems to care.

The Wall Street Journal has called McAuliffe's bluff.

He won't be able to weasel out of this one because the WSJ is one of the most widely read and respected papers not only in the USA, but the world. Sorry Mr. McAuliffe. :-)

I expect better than this from the WSJ. McAuliffe sold well before the GX peak, which was quite some time before their accounting problems led to the decline. The sentence starting with in other words is nonsense.

Mr. McAuliffe made an investment of $100,000 in Global Crossing shortly before it went public. Two years later he sold it for $18 million. Shortly thereafter, Global Crossing made a public announcement of decline in profits and the share price plummeted. It declared bankruptcy last January; in other words, Mr. McAuliffe pocketed $18 million for worthless shares.

Prior to the emergence of McAuliffe as the leader of the DNC I thought it would be impossible for the Clinton camp to produce anyone more loathsome than Carville or Begala.

McAuliffe almost makes those two insufferable demagogues look like decent men.

For the party to allow Mr. McAuliffe to be its spokesman on business ethics is an insult to voters, suggesting they're too dumb to recognize utter hypocrisy.

In school, children are taught that reporters are cut-throat, hard-hitting competitors who would scandalize their own mother for a good scoop. So, many assume they hear it all on TV. It's kind of like Logan's Run. If you don't go outside and look for yourself, you will stay in one place.

The only way this country is getting any better is conservatives and libertarians talking with people on the street.

Recognize hypocrisy? Yeah and if pigs could fly........ McAuliffe avoided indictment in the Teamsters/Democrat donations scandal only by the efforts of Mary Jo White. A House committee chaired by Rep. Peter Hoekstra noted that the Teamsters treasury had been looted to the tune of $812 million while Carey was president. McAuliffe was directly tied to the entire sordid mess and there are ample public records available. McAuliffe should be in prison along with Bill and Hillary but then maybe democrats are too dumb or just like the trashy characters they elect to run their party...a party that offers nothing new, just the same old slander, innuendo, race baiting, class warfare and continued criticizing of a good President, when they did nothing for eight years and are still complaining about the very things they said they had fixed or would fix.

If you had been in power for eight years and did nothing, would anyone vote for that sort of government again? McAuliffe is giving his party the coup de grace with his tired old rhetoric.

Do you have proof of this? I find it hard to believe that the Journal would make such a grevious error. Perhaps you should call it to the national press's attention.

McAuliffe's investment in GX was in 1997, GX went public in 1998. McAuliffe cashed out in late 1998 / early 1999, GX's stock peaked at ~64 in late summer / early fall that year. GX's debt problems became evident in early 2001 (2 years after McAuliffe cashed out), and they filed for Chap 11 in early 2002. All except the Chap 11 filing happened before McAuliffe became DNC chairman in 2001, BTW.

I've got the GX stock prices from inception as well as the first articles in summer of 1999 re: McAuliffe's sales on another box that's down for an upgrade, I'll post that info when I can get to it.
