House Resolution 794
By: Representatives Franklin of the 39th, Davis of the 60th, Jennings of the 63rd, Millar of the 59th, Yates of the 106th and others

A RESOLUTION

Redesignating portions of SR 154 and SR 10 as Memorial Drive; to repeal Part 4 of a Resolution Act approved May 1, 2000 (Ga. L. 2000, p. 1894); and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in light of the losses of life sustained by the United States of America on and after September 11, 2001, as a result of attacks on this nation by foreign enemies and in defense of this nation against further such attacks as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, it is altogether fitting and proper that this state appropriately honor the memory of those who perished in such attacks and who loyally and selflessly gave their own lives to rescue and defend their fellow citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the portion of SR 154 in DeKalb County from its intersection with Candler Road in Decatur, Georgia, to its intersection with SR 10 in DeKalb County; and that portion of SR 10 in DeKalb County from its intersection with SR 154 to its intersection with U.S. Highway 78 in DeKalb County (Cynthia McKinney Parkway from Candler Road in Decatur to U.S. Highway 78 in DeKalb County) is hereby redesignated and shall henceforth be known again as Memorial Drive in honor and memory of all of those United States citizens who died on or after September 11, 2001, as a result of attacks on this nation by foreign enemies and in defense of this nation against further such attacks as part of Operation Enduring Freedom; and the Department of Transportation is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs identifying the same.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Part 4 of a Resolution Act approved May 1, 2000 (Ga. L. 2000, p. 1894), is hereby repealed, which read as follows:
"Part 4
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the portion of State Highway 154 in DeKalb County from its intersection with Candler Road in Decatur, Georgia, to its intersection with State Highway 10 in DeKalb County; and that portion of State Highway 10 in DeKalb County from its intersection with State Highway 154 to its intersection with U.S. Highway 78 in DeKalb County (Memorial Drive from Candler Road in Decatur to U.S. Highway 78 in DeKalb County) is designated and shall henceforth be known as the Cynthia McKinney Parkway. The Department of Transportation is authorized and directed to place and 28 maintain signs designating such parkway."

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Department of Transportation.

One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Georgia was how readily the state was to rename streets (and bridges, and overpasses, and interchanges, and blocks, and freeways, and as much other stuff as you can think of) after people, mostly still living, and mostly politicians, or folks who paid politicians.

Needless to say, in 2000, a portion of Memorial Drive in DeKalb County was renamed Cynthia McKinney Parkway. Why? 'Cause someone was able to ramrod it through the state house.

Well, just as fast as you can blink, someone has introduced legislation to rename Cynthia McKinney Parkway back to Memorial Drive, but now specifically to honor victims of 9/11 and members of our Armed Forces participating in the war against terrorism.

I think it's hilarious - let's hope that it can get passed next session...

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

Based on her campaign contributors, Rep. McKinney would probably prefer to see the road renamed Bin Laden Boulevard.

I think you need a law that says you can only name state property after dead people.

I concur. As a bonus, that law would give the state legislature *two* possible resolutions to this issue! ;-)

Agreed, but there's already a Ronald Reagan Parkway over toward Lawrenceville. What's even more maddening is that Cynthia's daddy has a bridge (Bankhead Hwy over I-285) and a freeway (that same section of I-285 b/w I-20 & I-75 on the west side of Atlanta) named after him. God, how some things this state does just galls me!!

Perhaps a GW Bush Drive might work...

Sometimes I think it's the White LIBERALS that name these streets..like Martin Luther King Hghway in every city, just to designate that Blacks live around that area.

Years ago I watched a comedian on TV that had a line something like, "anytime you are driving around a city and find yourself on Martin Luther King road you better lock the doors and get the hell out of the area".

You'd love the symbolism in Gwinnett Co. Ga.

There is a Jimmy Carter Blvd. and a Ronald Reagan Pkwy both going East-West and not more than 7 miles (but a whole world) apart.

Jimmy Carter is a broken down, accident-prone, ugly mess of a road with empty store fronts.

RR Pkwy is an efficient, beautifully maintained and landscaped limited access 4 lane that WORKS!.

Architecture imitates Life!

Just noticed the other day that International Blvd,
was renamed to Andrew Young International Blvd.
That guy sucks big time and we sure don't need any streets named after him.

I've wondered about the protocol of naming things...at the mental institution where I work development officials of course have been pursuing "naming opportunities" for years.
In 1950 they named the new gym the "Alumni Memorial Gymnasium" in honor of the many alums (+125) who perished during WW2...but I guess a memorial isn't forever...last year they knocked it down for a new fancy rec center....so when does a memorial cease?
