Aug. 16, 2002 | WASHINGTON (AP) -- James Ziglar said Friday he'll retire by the end of the year as head of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, an agency that has endured intense criticism since the September terrorist attacks.
Ziglar, who took over the job on Aug. 6, 2001, told President Bush in a letter that he will remain to assist with the transition to a new Homeland Security Department. Ziglar said he plans to go into the private sector.
Ziglar was barely a month into the job when the attacks occurred, dramatically shifting his priorities from improving the agency's services for immigrants to implementing ways to better track foreigners and tightening the borders.
"Although I could not have imagined the events of Sept. 11 and the dramatic changes visited upon the Immigration and Naturalization Service, I have done my best to continue making progress toward the goals of restructuring the agency and reducing backlogs while responding to the call to arms in the war on terrorism," Ziglar said in his resignation letter, dated Thursday.
"I believe that the record will indicate that we have made substantial progress toward those goals," wrote Ziglar, who has been recovering from surgery he underwent in mid-July to repair a herniated disk in his lower back.

What was the matter with this guy? Was he a holdover from the previous Administration? At least he wasn't Doris Meissner.
To: B Knotts; Rodney King
Excellent nomination. If he is not available, I offer Bob Dornan as a substitute.
President Bush: Please secure our borders!
To: B Knotts
I second that motion!

About time! Dornan, Spencer, Tancredo as replacements? Any of them would suit me! (Never happen, of course.)
To: B Knotts
Not soon enough...the INS is a complete disgrace.

I tagged this as Breaking News. It should replace the other headline-only thread that is already there.

No, Jim, you've diddled enough. Just go.
Much will be learned by whom President Bush appoints to replace this do-nothing, malfeasant boyhood chum of Trent Lott.
Hopefully the President has learned from his Section 245(i) stumble this Spring, and he'll appoint someone who takes this job seriously.
But if Bush appoints another soft-on-Illegals loser, what may we safely conclude about his commitment to upholding and protecting our laws, border, culture, and sovereignty?

Ditto! Thanks for the ping.

How about Pat Buchanan? Wouldn't that send a message to the "open borders" crowd! Either that or Tom Tancredo. Someone who actually intends to enforce immigration law, instead of nodding and winking to those who openly break it.

I nominate Michelle Malkin to be the new INS Chief.
Let the Democrats try and demagogue her.
To: Billy_bob_bob; brightx
Oh please, please, please let them offer it to Pat Buchanan

Imagine this: The prettiest woman in the world should be the most selective woman in finding a mate? All she has to do is look and see that there is a line of people begging for her attention, willing to worship her, and declare how much they adore her, and would never cheat on her!...Stay with me, please----
Then imagine some liberal congressmen ordering this trophy of a woman to mate with any stinking worthless bum in order that she will give EQUAL OPPORTUNITY to all people. The congressmen say, your mate does not have to tell you I love you, does not have to declare his faithfulness to you!
Now, I bet you got what I am trying to say. The US is the most desirable country in the world. Millions who are qualified and willing to die for this country and its noble principles are rejected in order that we may give visas to worthless Moslems who hate us, and will never assimilate in our society? What a stupid congress, and what a stupid INS!
