Steyn is as brilliant as usual here. But the great and terrible question behind this essay is: Why do these points need to be raised at all? Why isn't it evident to everyone by now that no "oppression," no "religion," and no "cultural difference" could possibly justify this savagery or exculpate those who practice it?

When it's necessary for a great talent like Steyn to put his time to reminding people that rape is wrong, it's time to be afraid. Very afraid.

Perhaps because hypocrisy pays better than honesty?

Too easy, I know; but so long as careerists in government direct our affairs, we are mere ciphers in their fatally naive calculations.

They are sure that their pensions will be in place, when they retire from a long and devoted life of public service.

Like children, they have no idea of the true weight of these issues. And yet they presume to lead.

An historical moment is approaching.
