She's a lousy momma, but slapping people in jail for this sort of stupidity? This is going too far.
To: marshmallow
i agree, she is an idiot, but to put someone in jail for this is too much......
To: marshmallow
Who cares what happens to mamma?
Let's pray that there are more responsible family members who will get custody of these poor children.
To: marshmallow
The children had second degree sunburns A second degree burn is one that raises blisters. This was no ordinary "got a little red and later their skin peeled" sunburn.
From a negligence standpoint, this is on par with leaving a child locked in a hot car. Something that can do serious damage.

>>...Hibbits, 31, of Brilliant, could face 15 years ...<<
They should make her move to a different town.
To: marshmallow
Unbelieveable. I wonder if my hubby should go to jail because our daughter once fell off the table (seated in her bouncy chair) while under his care.
To: Brookhaven
This was no ordinary "got a little red and later their skin peeled" sunburn. This isn't anywhere near leaving a kid in a hot car while she goes off and does her thing. She was pushing them around, was there with them all the time. This kind of burn can happen quite quickly on a young child. Heck for all we know, she was trying to be a good mom! And here we are trying to say she should have the kids removed from her custody? PULLLEASE!
She may be a little ignorant, but that doesn't warrant taking her kids away.
To: Brookhaven
This is nuts! I don't care if they have blisters. Please wake up. The mother was doing what? Treating her kids to the fair. Felony charges? This is one big nanny state, I have to tell you. Sun burn is an American tradition. I had sun poisoning as a kid. But I would never take that day back. Every time I went to the beach, sunburn! Blisters sometimes. Think I want my mom to go to jail for it? H!LL NO!
These kids want their mom with them. They do not want their mom in jail. This is sick. The sun has fooled millions of moms every year since the beginning of time. That is no reason for the government to do a darn thing.
To: Terriergal
Moms being fooled by the sun... I wonder how many moms have
not ever been fooled by the sun?
On a broader level, I do not think that we want mothers to get any more protective than they already are. Mothers smother their kids already. How bad does it have to get?
To: marshmallow
Don't stupidity and abuse often cross.
To: marshmallow; goldylight
Bush should promise to pardon this poor mother. That is what the pardon pen is made for, not for pardoning bomb terrorists or selling pardons to crack dealers the way birthday boy Clintoon did.
To: Brookhaven
When I was in the Marine Corps, it was made very plain that getting a recreational sunburn (to the point where you couldn't perform your assigned duties) was a Courts Martial offense........as far as I know, this is still the case.

that should be, Don't stupidity and abuse often cross?
To: Brookhaven
I agree.

Army was same policy - UCMJ offense
To: ItisaReligionofPeace
My mom was a repeat offender. I was sunburned a dozen times as a kid. How did I turn out? Just fine. How much did that sunburn affect my childhood? Very, very little. This is overkill. Felony? How about this? The government leave her the heck alone. Bush should humiliate this state by promising to pardon her.

Essentially, all the sunburns that I got as a kid were my own durn fault. And I got some doozys out in the hot Oklahoma sun.
But those were in the bygone days when the state didn't stick its nose into everything that happens.

I think people who re-elected birthday boy Clinton in '96 did society a lot more harm than all of America's sunburns put together. How about filing felony charges on them?
