From 11 SEPT 2001-7June 2002 the Coast Guard has:

Conducted over 3,500 air patrols.
Conducted over 2,000 boardings of high interest vessels
Escorted 6,000 vessels in/out of port.
Conducted over 7,000 Search and Rescue Cases
Assisted over 10,000 mariners
Saved 1,576 lives.
Interdicted 2,995 illegal migrants
Responded to over 200 pollution cases
Sea Marshals have escorted over 2,000 vessels
Maintained over 115 Security Zones
Seized 104,158 lbs of cocaine
Seized 28,049 lbs of marijuana
Most important, the Coast Guard saves lives.
"Ten or 12 people today will go home to dinner with their family
only because the Coast Guard got them out of trouble,"
said Adm. James Loy, commandant of the Coast Guard.
Now that's a respectable day's work.
All from a service of only 35,000 people, fewer than the New York Police Department.

"Conducted over 2,000 boardings of high interest vessels "
There was 1 such boarding today while I was on watch.
I can't really post just what happened
but can tell you that this particular boat had called
in on the radio for information about coming into Coos Bay.
The OOD Gave me some specific questions to ask the boat
and based upon the answers a boarding team met the boat at the dock.
The OOD's "6th sense" was right.
