Pop up ads

Has anyone else been getting pop-up ads while surfing freeRepublic? I have gotten several without leaving this site. The latest is the Official 2002 Smokers survey which asks me to enter my name address and other information to win a flat screen TV. This one poped up after I clicked on the "Messages" link.

Sometimes. Usually. Every now and then there are programs that you might desire that use spyware. Such as Kazza, for example. If you delete the malicious file it will not work. So backing it up can help you if you delete a file that you may want.

I still have a lot of unexplained traffic being block by my firewall. Does anyone know what I can do to combat this intrusive activity?

Hmmmnn.... Interesting site there, Dallas. I'll have to check it out.

Right now, I run ad-aware every once in a while. I have yet to find any spy-ware, unless there's some spyware out there that it doesn't catch.

Whew....I bet you're relieved.

These kind of intrusions really tick me off....along with junk faxes/phone solicitation/traffic/moose bites.......awwhhhhhhhhh...somebody stop me.

Are you using Zone-alarm? I use it and it works well at blocking access and in blocking programs on your computer from accessing the web. I had 21 hits today, many from the same site or at least the same network with only a different last 3 digits.

I don't know what you can do to stop the attempted intrusions from outside.

check where they're connecting to. Do a whois search somewhere like Same Spade or Geektools. It'll give you the company that owns the address it's connecting to. That can sometimes clue you off.

Yes I'm very happy about getting that junk off my machine. It was having a bad affect on my cursor since it was eating up my CPU.

Look in the "Security and Privacy" section under the "Cache and Cookie" listing for anti-spyware.....but I think Lavasoft's Adware pretty much handles it.
