Reno spins her promises while Bush just waits
Published August 25, 2002
Excdrtp:
Janet Reno sits in the room, reminding me of a child laying out a Christmas wish list for Florida....
Reno is spinning fantasies to "energize the base" of the party. ...
However, reality has a way of intruding in the general election, where the moderate swing vote decides the winner.
....
Even more telling, Bush has agreed to debate her three times.... In politics, the underdog challenger is the one who should be demanding debates. The heavily favored incumbent is the one reluctant to share the stage and risk a major gaffe.
... she knows they [her proposals] can't withstand scrutiny from a prepared challenger. Bush would dismantle her.
Before that happens, Reno owes the Democrats a fast explanation of how she plans to deliver the goods.

Reno pushes growth management as one of her vital issues. Jeb Bush couldn't get a decent growth-management bill through the Legislature. So the Republicans are going to give one to a Democrat they detest?
I'm not sure what Mike Thomas meant in the above sentence, as Gov Bush did get a Growth Management bill passed, even though it required a lot of work on his part, because it involved so many parties initially opposed to any growth management. But, these various factions must be happy with the compromise, since one of them, the FL Home Builders Association, is now endorsing Gov Bush. Here is info about this important bill, which is sure to alleviate overcrowding in FL's schools during FL's ongoing population boom:

Other than that point, I think Mike Thomas has written another on-target column. He must be driving Mark Silva, the Orlando Sentinel's political editor who loves Reno, absolutely nuts. LOL
.
Finally, here's a schedule published today in the Orlando Sentinel about the upcoming debates in FL:
October 22nd is listed as the day Gov Bush debates his opponent in a discussion moderated by NBC's Tim Russert of Meet the Press. I expect this debate will be broadcast statewide -- and not just on Orlando's local WESH TV station.
PS Check out this photo of Gov Bush the newspaper ran with this debate schedule - does Gov. Bush look happy or what? :)
Gov Jeb Bush
has already agreed to THREE debates.

Florida Home Builders Association Endorses Bush
ORLANDO - The Bush-Brogan 2002 campaign is pleased to announce the endorsement of the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA), an organization representing residential construction professionals throughout the state. The 15,000 members of the FHBA and their 300,000 employees contribute $40 billion annually to Floridas economy. The official announcement was made Friday during Governor Bushs visit to the FHBAs 2002 Southeast Building Conference in Orange County.
A thriving building industry is a principle driver of Floridas economy, Bush said. Lt. Governor Brogan and I have worked with Floridas builders to ensure that Floridians have access to safe, affordable housing and to cut government red tape. We are honored and privileged to once again have the endorsement of the FHBA.
Governor Bush and Lt. Governor Brogan have been strong supporters of Floridas home builders since the start of their administration day one, FHBA President Barbara Revels said. We look forward to doing all we can do to ensure that they are re-elected.
Governor Bush thanked Floridas Home Builders Association members for their help in passing new growth management reforms that will bring school boards, developers and local governments together to address school capacity and water availability in Floridas communities.
Governor Bush also spoke of his commitment to comprehensive reform of Floridas workers compensation system. In May of 2002, he created the Governors Commission on Workers Compensation Reform, which will provide recommendations on how to make workers compensation insurance affordable, speed up dispute resolution, and improve benefits for injured workers.
Fridays endorsement is the fifth in a series of endorsement announcements made by the campaign. Over the past two months, the Florida Professional Firefighters Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Police Benevolent Association, and most recently, the Florida Health Care Association have all endorsed the campaign.

Gee, I wonder why Janet Reno has such a tough time agreeing to debates. You think she's too busy attending more dance parties??? :)

Even more telling, Bush has agreed to debate her three times . . . [rather than being] reluctant to share the stage and risk a major gaffe. . . . she knows they [her proposals] can't withstand scrutiny from a prepared challenger. Bush would dismantle her.
This would seem to indicate that Jeb agrees with you that Janet's primary victory is a done deal. Why else risk buying yourself a stronger opponent in the general election?
To: conservatism_IS_compassion
Well, unless she has a major medical problem causing her to leave the race before the primary, I think she's going to win it. What happening with McLawyer is too little; too late. Even the endorsements he's getting from newspapers sound so weak - they promise he will bring a "new style" to Tallahassee, but admit he is short on ideas. (He "pledges" to do more on the environment because he can't figure out exactly what should or should not be done.) Not an appealing package for swing voters.

The Florida version of the Washington comPost or New York Times Pravda.

Bush better be prepared to deal with a huge illegal voting scadal .... ! And I mean have troops "on the ground" ready to make arrests and to investigate and to prosecute ... Reno did not plan to lose this election, but hopes to win illegally by any means necessary, You heard it here first ...

Jeb vs. Janet debates would be great, though ANYONE debating Janet Reno would come off looking good. I think back to Hunter S. Thompson's comment on Nixon vs. Edmund Muskie in 1972, as being like a turf battle between a wolverine and a three-toed sloth.

Doesn't this creature have a church to burn down or something? If fact, we could actually use her talents to burn down every mosque in the USA. All we have to do is tell her that there may be guns inside and instant inferno.
