Fisherman Reels In Human Head FBI Investigating Discovery Posted: 8:59 a.m. EDT August 26, 2002 Updated: 12:21 p.m. EDT August 26, 2002

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- A Fort Pierce man out fishing with his son and a friend made a gruesome discovery in the waters of the Atlantic: a human head. Paul Trabulsy found the dismembered body part about 22 miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet.

The men used a gaff to fish the head out of the water and placed it in a garbage bag. Then they kept right on fishing.

"We didn't want to come in right away, so we just put it in a bag in a bucket. It'd been out there awhile. What's a couple of hours?" Trabulsy said.

The men docked and reported their discovery to the authorities about five hours later.

Federal and local authorities are investigating the origin of other human remains and a body found miles apart in the waters off Florida's east coast, officials said Sunday.

A body was found in the waters off Cape Canaveral Saturday, Russell said.

Medical examiners in Brevard and Martin counties took possession of the remains in an effort to identify them. It has been determined that the remains of one of the dead belonged to a female, Russell said.

"We have no way to correlate right now where these remains may have come from,'' Russell said. "We have multiple search and rescue cases every day.''

Russell said the Coast Guard was searching Sunday for one overdue vessel that may have come from Cuba with migrants aboard, but stressed that it was too early to know whether the discovery of the remains was connected to the fate of those aboard the missing boat.

FBI Miami spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said agents were investigating but had no additional details on the case.

"We have reports that people are missing from Cuba,'' Orihuela said. "We're just looking into it right now.''

Similar scene right out of an Altman movie "Short Cuts", where Fred Ward and his buddies see a floating female corpse and keep right on fishing. From a Raymond Carver story. Not a good movie overall.

Most of the fish we catch are given to the employees who work at my friends job site. These guys love the fish and request the heads are not cut off when cleaning them. I guess we would probably be freaked out and bring the human head back, but if our emotions allowed it I don't think it would be so wrong to put the head on ice and call it in. Heck, if we were anchored the police would be better off coming out so they would be able to mark a spot to dredge.

When you think about it,staying out left the fishermen with a better chance than anyone to find something else to aid an investigation.

Years ago a man was missing and presumed to be a drowning victim.I was diving the lake at the time and when searchers gave up I moved into the area on the chance I might happen into the body.I was working on bottom anyway and it would have helped give closure to his family.

Turned out he had been murdered by his wife and was in the backyard all along.

Several years later, working on a river I met a man that had lost his father the year before in the water.I found out enough from him to keep an eye out in the right area.

A couple years later some people found one bone washed up down river and had the sense to realize it was human.

When the bone was seen to be modern, everything fell in place for the insurance company to pay off.

We used to find bodies, well, sort of, on occasion when I was in the Navy... Not the most pleasant of things to find floating around...

A foursome on a Sunday afternoon...........next to the course, a motorcade passes by, all with their headlights ablaze; obviously a funeral procession.

One of the foursome steps away from the tee, looks at the motorcade, stands erect and doffs his hat in respect.

The others follow his lead...and afterward, one says "Gee, Bob; never figured you for such a respectful sort."

Bob replies, "Well, ya know, yer married to a woman for 26 years......................"

A man is golfing with his wife and on the 14th hole he makes a terrible shot and ends up behind a storage shed. There's doors on both ends so his wife suggests, "if I hold open the door at the far end and you prop open the door on this side you can probably hit the ball through the shed. So he agrees to try this and mishits the ball again. It ricochets around inside the shed a few times before hitting his wife in the head, killing her instantly.

A year later he is golfing with some friends on the same course and on the 14th hole hits the ball behind the shed again. His friends examine the shed and one of them suggests that if they hold the doors open he might be able to hit the ball through the shed. "No way! The last time I tried that I got a triple bogey."
