Woman viciously attacked by pitbull; Dog attacked at least three other times

Bakersfield - An Oildale woman wants some answers as to why a vicious dog, with a history of assault wasn't restrained.

Charlotte Reintz says it took just seconds yesterday for a pitbull to attack her.

She says she's traumatized and wonders why something wasn't done about the dog that has apparently attacked, not once, not twice, but at least three previous times.

Reintz was viciously attacked by a pitbull on Belle Avenue in Oildale while walking to a friend's house Sunday.

"I put my shirt out like this and it just started biting my shirt to keep it from biting me any more and it seemed like forever before somebody came out there," said Reintz.

Her piercing screams sent neighbors rushing from their homes to rescue her.

"I got up to see what it was and we brought her here in the yard," said neighbor Kenneth Caudillo. "The guy next door helped get the dog off of her and we helped her call 911."

Neighbors say the traumatic assault should never have happened.

"This animal had a dangerous order placed on it in Sept. of 2001, after a couple of incidents which required the animal to be maintained within its yard on a tether not less than 12 feet," said Steve McCalley of Kern County Environmental Health. "Apparently it has not been maintained consistent with the dangerous order."

Now, Reintz is nursing wounds in her hands, legs, and chest area, but she says her injuries run deep.

Reintz says she can't comment on whether she'll pursue any type of legal action in light of the attack.

The dog will remain under quarantine at the animal shelter pending the outcome of the investigation.

The owner has five business days to appeal the quarantine order before the dog is put down.

The owner is the one who should be in jail. There is no excuse for this.

As an owner of Pit bull dogs I hate it when they get this type of publicity, especially when the dogs dumb@ss owners could have prevented it. This dog should never have been wondering around, period. Now we have to listen to all the opponents of Pit bull dogs bitch, bitch, bitch and in this case rightfully so. If a dog like this attacks someone unprovoked, they shouldn't get a third chance to do it again. I'm not familiar with California, so I don't know if this is a rural area or not. But dogs like this do not belong in the city.

I totally agree.
As the owner of a pit puppy, I hate to see them get a bad rap.
Jail the owner.

I used to have a rottweiler/lab mix. Looked like a rott through and through. All I ever heard people say when I told them about my dog was that he would turn on me, eat the children, etc. It is a form of 'dog racism'. We need reparations now! Free dog biscuits to all maligned dogs :)

NOPE!!! In California all dogs do not get probation. MY dog didn't. He was shot by the Oakland Police when I called them because I thought someone was breaking in and he ran out the door. Didn't give him a chance. Shot him three times too...just to make sure he was dead. F______ers.

You should have yelled something like 'Oh no, he was the stud for the state troopers police dog unit!' would have loved to seen the look on their stupid faces.

Pit's are like any other dog, you treat them with discipline, love & respect and they will be the best dogs you've ever owned. One thing you need to remember dtel is that when your dog screws up as a puppy, make sure he understands that it's wrong. Sometimes that means whipping his butt with a stick, make sure he fully understands because a pit bull that thinks he's in charge will have you in trouble like this fellow. They can be hard headed dogs but so can any dog, the meanest dog I ever owned was not a Pit it was a Miniture Schnauzer that had no fear what so ever.

I have a pit bull too. I don't think i'd hit a dog with a stick to train it though. Mine was trained without being hit ever (a few slaps on the butt now and then), and he's been a great dog going on 11 years now. He trusts humans so completely that you can raise your arm like you'll strike him and even swing toward him and he won't flinch. He simply cannot imagine a person hitting him.

The pit bull rap is totally undeserved. Like most terriers, they are fairly dog-aggressive and are stubborn, but they're more people-centered than most other breeds. Hell, the only dog that ever bit me was a dachshund!

I agree with you...the big difference though is that when a pit-bull attacks it doesn't play around...

Reintz was viciously attacked by a pitbull on Belle Avenue in Oildale while walking to a friend's house Sunday.

If this had been the DoubleDee, there would be one less mutt terrorizing Belle Avenue right now.

LOL, not at you, but one of my other dogs is a Miniature Schnauzer and she is fearless, as you say.
My wife and I had a big old attack trained Doberman years ago, we know exactly what you mean.
We raise our male dogs with a very firm hand and expect them to immediately obey our commands.
The pup is turning out pretty well and he and the Aussie pup should be a formidable combination on the coyotes here at the ranch.

Same with my Amstaff; in fact, I'm a little worried about how he may react if someone breaks into my home when I'm not there. Hopefully, an intruder will be scared off just by seeing him through my glass front door.

I think their appearance alone tends to work pretty well as a deterrent. I mean, my dog is all muscle, his head is huge, and his bark is really scary, even if it's not backed up with a bite. Your dog would probably start barking if someone tried to break in, and as long as the robber doesn't see too much wagging tail, he'd probably turn tail and run...

One of the big differences that you & I have over most that will post on this subject is that we live on ranches. My house is smack in the middle of 150 acres, dogs like this need space to run around. They don't need to be next door to several families in an apartment complex or sub-division with lot's of children who typically will pick at the dogs.

Area of modest, lower middle class homes on small to middling lots.

Not rural, residential now. No place for dog of this type unless on chain behind fence.

I didn't mean to give anyone the indication that I beat my dogs all the time, I simply meant if he screwed up he got his butt whipped. I'll give you a for instance & you will understand why he needed it. My little girl at the time was about 5 or 6 years old, Hammer which is my dog was approximately 1 1/2 yrs old. Amanda was playing with Hammer and he knocked her down, being a dog and wanting to show dominance he climbed on top of her & kept her down. I had to show him that would never happen again and that is one instance in which I felt a serious stick whippin was necessary. But that was about the only time I ever had to do that. He is probably the best dog i've ever had & he has never hurt or tried hurt me or my family in any way. But he was also trained properly & loved as a family member.
