The Harare offices of Voice of the People - an independent radio station - were blown up early this morning. The offices, in a house in Van Praagh Avenue in the Harare residential suburb of Milton Park, were left gutted and roofless, with recording and office equipment of considerable value destroyed. There were no injuries.
At around 2:00 am this morning, three men - one of whom was armed - manhandled and threatened the security guard at the offices. The men entered the premises and a series of explosions were heard shortly afterwards. "The building has been bombed and it looks like it was done by a professional. The blast came from inside and blew out the entire structure. The roof is gone, the windows are disseminated and every room is charred," said one witness. Voice of the People broadcast to Zimbabwe twice a day on shortwave.
In another incident, police yesterday arrested 17 workers on a farm in the Mazowe area. The workers were engaged in constructing a camp for displaced farmworkers. Those arrested were still in custody in Bindura police station this morning.
