THAT Smith left the party for a while is an advantage IMO.
It shows that he has the courage of his convictions.
Unlike Sununu who is a RINO in full regalia.

As for me and my house, we'll be voting for Smith.

Smith left the GOP and denounced it, only to come scuttling back when his presidential campaign went nowhere and he saw the opportunity to become a committee chairmen.

As to changing his views, he has suddenly become a big "environmentalist," and opposes Pres. Bush's proposal to permit drilling in ANWR.
