Yes, but I believe in most places it's only a misdemeanor, barely above parking ticket level. It's the prostitutes themselves that get the heavier charges. Rather like drug dealing, really; the first-time buyer/offender will probably just get probation and maybe an anti-drug indoctrination course, while the dealer gets sent away for ten years. Selling's always worse than buying.

This guy may not be married. The way the note was worded, it may well be just generic wording trying to get the extortion victim worked up, without reflecting any actual knowledge of the extortionee's family, etc., situation.

If he's not married, then in my opinion it's his business whether or not he wants to pay for BJ's. I realize that's not the legal situation, but it's my opinion. I think extortion is much worse than paying for a few BJ's. You'd think that $300 a "shot" is a little steep, though.

Besides, I like the fact that Beckel refused to be blackmailed. He may be a sleaze, but he's no wimp.
