That said (my #10), you should probably plead for some gratis Counsel from the legal beagles here on FR. This kind of minor dust-up might be beneath Harbour and Pardek's "pay scale", but you might be able to wheedle some advice outta them pro bono if you ask nice. ;-)

Now if your name were Lizzie Grubman and you backed into a crowd of people on purpose... But it isn't. I'm not a lawyer, but I think a good lawyer could get this bargained down to something more reasonable. Don't ask the system to be kind. In Scottsdale, Arizona, my wife forgot to use her disabled parking tag. They fined her $90 and expected her to show up in court on their schedule to argue it. It was a day when we had to travel. Etc. Etc. They wanted the money, that's all. I told them, "I will let people know how you treat the disabled in Scottsdale."

In our case it wasn't worth any more aggravation. In the case posted I am sure a lawyer could reason with the system.
I would rather earn money for a month than spend a month in jail. The trade off is the lawyer's fee. And he will accept a schedule of payments.
