"So why can't we have a "whole loaf" candidate like Ronald Reagan anymore??????????????"

No answer.

Okay, I'll bite my own question: Because if Ronald Reagan were to arrive on the polical scene today, he'd HAVE TO RUN 3RD PARTY!

Thanks for expressing your opinion about Bill Simon. That it corresponds with the message which Gay Davis is trying to emanate should not necessarily suggest anything other than a coinskeedence.

I suspected this was the case. A pro-Simon bump for California.

Reagan was far from a "whole loaf candidate".

"Reagan was far from a "whole loaf candidate".

So he would advocate "Gay Pride Day" and domestic partners? Now you would attack Ronald Reagan's legacy to defend this RINO? How far we have fallen!

I have to wonder just how many FReepers are from California and of those how many are registered to vote and of those how many really vote and of those that really vote how many will really vote for Simon and if none of us voted for Simon would it make a rats ess of a difference in the election ?

Yes the numbers may seem unlikely but I do know that most Freepers are viewed in their neighborhoods and among family and coworkers as the "authority" on politics. That goes a long, long way.

Freepers write letters to the editor and go to public gatherings and speak out. Some Freepers are even talk show hosts like Hugh Hewitt, or else the talk show producers who come here to gather material. (Apparently Hugh mentioned the eGray.org site on his show shortly after it appeared on FR last night.) I know for a fact that Rush's people peruse FR for material.

Finally there are many lurkers who read FR for news etc. and never sign up.

Freeping is good, Freeping is wholesome, Freeping is a way of life. Freeping can and does make a difference.

I read it. It's not my view but then I have the luxury of sitting on the sidelines and being a critic. I'm not spending my time and money trying to win that job.

Californians have two choices: Simon or Davis. Simon is far, far more conservative on issues very important to me (pro life, pro 2nd A) than the average Republican candidate. A Californian who considers himself a conservative would have to be a damn fool not to make it a point to vote for Simon.

I have voted for far more liberal candidates than Simon (Arlen Specter, namely) and I was glad to have done so.

I voted against Specter, too, on the basis of principle -- something I regret. If he had lost the '92 race to Lynn Yeakel I would still be kicking myself.

Get Simon in. If he turns out to be unbearably RINO, then support a primary candidate four years from now. Or spend your time and money and run against him yourself.

Looks like a bunch of letters typed out there. Did you make this up? Did the lunatic who runs CCF make it up?

Why don't you start calling Republican California legislators and ask them what they think of the guy who runs that operation out of his living room.... he's not welcome over at the capitol anymore because he flies off the handle and defames good conservatives before he knows what he is talking about. Start with Senator Johannessen in Redding.

If the stalwart conservative Senator Ray Haynes spoke to Bill Simon and got it straight, then I'll believe him every time.

Log Cabin was founded in 1978 to battle the nation's first anti-gay ballot measure -- California's Proposition 6. The gay Republican opposition in Los Angeles came to refer to itself as the Log Cabin Club in reference to Abraham Lincoln and the heritage of the Republican Party. These first Log Cabin activists enlisted Ronald Reagan to publicly oppose the California measure, which then went down to defeat. Since then, Log Cabin Republicans has grown to become a leading voice on the national stage on behalf of the mainstream concerns of the gay and lesbian community.

Well, that pretty much says it all. You trust politicians over public advocates.

You're the type of person politicians dream about.

I trust people I know to be good and decent Christians like Ray Haynes.

I don't trust people who spend all their time generating anger and dissent like Randy Thomasson does. Everything he does is from a negative standpoint. Everything is all about scaring Christians into angry phone calls. How sad that many of these well meaning people are duped into calling a legislator yelling about something that the guy is in total agreement with them on. Ask yourself what this guy has done from a positive perspective.

I don't trust people who create hysteria before they have all the facts like Randy Thomasson has a history of doing.

He is wrong, wrong, wrong about Bill Simon. He likes to quote scripture but one of the oldest scriptures says "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

Yes. I trust Senator Haynes because he is one of the lonely voices in Sacramento standing up for what is right. Ask Randy Thomasson why he would wrongly harrass a decent man like Senator Haynes.

Well that's as close to a childhood tongue-raspberry as I've ever seen one -- the last resort of someone losing an argument.

Here is Senator Haynes' web site please go there and review the issues that are important to him. Then come back and tell me how I must mistrust him.

Than you have the reactionary Republicans which are set off by this, they start complaining.

Wait a minute, I wouldn't classify everyone who was shocked and disappointed as reactionary. I've always advocated that a Pubbie with warts will usually get one closer to accomplishing one's agenda than any Dem. But I too, was aghast at this story, and felt betrayed, just like many Freepers at the time. If it is a false story, then thats a great relief, but lots of questions remain.

WHY ON EARTH DID IT TAKE THIS LONG FOR THE CAMPAIGN TO REFUTE THIS? It isn't something you can let simmer for awhile. If Simon's stances are contradictory to what was originally reported, how hard is it to release a quick press release denying the basic story, before most people head out for Labor Day vacations?

Instead, a false story will be passed around many a family weekend gathering, spreading further and further. And even when the correct story eventually makes it around, a lot of persons are going to wonder what the heck is going on with that campaign.

Davis may have played a dirty trick, but the Simon campaign's lethargic or ineffective response made it a lot worse. Quite frankly, I'm not sure what to believe about this whole incident.

DATE: August 29, 2002
TO: Honorable Dick Mountjoy, President
California Republican Assembly
FROM: Bill Simon Thank you very much for that very kind letter of support that you have sent out to our conservative supporters across California. You have been an inspirational leader for the conservative cause for so many years that it has been an honor to work with you so closely over the last 18 months.

Despite the sensationalizing by some of the liberal newspapers, I have not changed my position on any of the important moral and social issues facing California. While the campaign sends out answers to hundred of questionnaires, sometimes they may not be as clear as we would like. So I wanted to take this opportunity to keep you abreast of my deeply held beliefs.

The campaign answers questionaires? THE CAMPAIGN? Who the hell is running for Governor? Bill Simon or some nameless, faceless staffer?
