efreedomnews     WAR ON TERRORISM - AN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE
War on Iraq: Operations Begin - AMERICANS DEBATE
Private support for Invasion
Jonathan Rhodes
September 2, 2002 [Labor Day]
As this Labor Day dawns, in the expectation of 911's first anniversary, the US is holding a massive national debate about invading Iraq. Interestingly enough, the Republicans are debating among themselves, and the people are debating among themselves. The Democrats are not involved. They publicly support the president, with some reservations regarding Congressional review (which the White House has promoted all along). Privately, they are torn between the realities of Saddam's danger and their great angst at being unable to vociferously condemn the administrations policy - since the latest ABC polls show 65% of the American people support invasion - and internet polls are running at over 90% approval.
National Debate Begins
   Case for Invasion

No matter. Fed up with the repetitive pompous blathering of Rather, Jennings, Brokaw and the rest of the major media talking heads, Americans are taking to the internet in droves to find out the facts, the analysis, and participate in the debate themselves.

Debate is raging on the internet regarding the US policy of preemptive intervention in Iraq.  Americans have found an outlet, and an information source, on chatboards across America. This is  from Ann Coulter's website anncoulter.org.

Q. Do you think the US has more support for an invasion of Iraq "off the record?"

The short answer to your question is yes.

The longer answer: The Euros have no stomach for intervention and still cling lifelessly to the concept of "Realpolitik" started in 1648 (Treaty of Westphalia) when even the modern patron saint of that diplomatic dogma, Henry Kissinger has given it up when it comes to Iraq. The terrorism of recent times has not significantly affected Europe, and they see it as our problem. France in particular and the EU in general, do huge business with Iraq and do not want that upset.
National Debate Begins

The German Chancellor, Schroeder, is just blustering in a last ditch attempt to rescue himself from horrible poll numbers (for him) in an upcoming election.
Policy of Appeasement Returns to Europe

The Arabs are beset with huge domestic problems from Islamic Fundamentalism which hates America and Israel - but also hates Secular Arab governments. Promoting the invasion of an Arab state will not play well on the Arab "street."

The Saudis have even more domestic problems with a dying king and internal battles over succession. They have real fears that a larger middle-eastern war would involve their lands. The Saudis have historically sat on the sidelines whenever possible and it is in their best interest to maintain the status quo in the middle east, where they are fat and happy.
Saudi Peace Effort: and Iraq

Notice no one is "backing" Saddam - just advising more negotiation. Although, as President Bush said,

"They are either with us or with the terrorists."

Ann Coulter adds:

"To paraphrase Orwell, in this war, those who cannot stay focused on fighting the enemy are objectively pro-terrorist. "

Liberalism and terrorism: Different stages of same disease

Those asking for caution are not idiots. They know negotiation with Saddam is worthless -- they just don't want their situations upset. They do not operate from principal. They are amoral pragmatists in this matter.
However, privately, they will all go with a winner -

Jonathan

IMO the Europeans callously believe that their opposition to USA will buy the temporary immunity to terror except perhaps attacks on US Embassies within their borders.

The only serious debate to be had is going on amongst Bush and his cabinet. That debate is over how best to defeat Saddam.
