The bodies of 2,803 human beings were buried when the World Trade Center crumbled into 3 billion pounds of debris. Miraculously, 20 people survived the collapse, amid steel beams, concrete slabs and other wreckage. They escaped death in the most unlikely of ways and in the most surprising of places. Fourteen people survived inside the remnants of a stairwell at the center of the north tower. One man remembers falling from a 22nd floor stairwell in the north tower and regaining consciousness atop the 12-story-deep pile of rubble at Ground Zero. Two police officers, trapped in debris between the towers, barely survived both collapses.

I am so thankful that USAtoday has the fortitude to print stories like this, while so many other agencies want to airbrush away the horror.

There is a program on History Channel called "Relics from the Rubble" that is similar. The New York (City?) Historical Society started that very day to collect artifacts from the disaster, starting with a donated breathing mask.

Same here.
For reasons known but to G-d, I bought a copy of USA Today on Tuesday...first time in years.
I was mesmerized by their "hold no punches" coverage...especially their clinical
analysis of how many people had fallen from the buildings (rather than being burned alive).
And seeing the one photo of five people taking the fall...I put down the paper and
phoned a cousin, telling him to make sure he got an copy.

USA Today, for this weeks series of articles needs to get some sort of prize for
journalistic courage...even admitting that they'd fallen into the self-censorship trap
following 9-11 (said they only published one photo of falling victims, then nothing).

I haven't seen the paper, only the reports here on FreeRepublic, but I believe they have written that the falling bodies may have saved countless other lives, by affecting the decisions of many Tower occupants. That is valid news that should have been given more coverage.

Two French brothers have made a powerful documentary about that morning, and they edited out from their film the sounds of the bodies falling . Quite correctly. But to try and pretend that it did not happen is very wrong to my way of thinking.

If a loved one of mine had died in that attack, whether by falling, burning, crushing, or in any other way, I don't see how the manner would affect how I felt about the attack or the loss.

I may be wrong on this...
but if we're talking about the documentary that was shown on CBS done by the two French
brothers, I think I recall that in one portion when they are with the firemen in
the lobby of one of the WTC towers, the sound of a couple of the bodies hitting the
metal cover over a circular driveway are pretty loud and clear. They kind of sounded like
loud, but dull, metal thuds.

IIRC, one of the brothers said that he either turned his camera off/away when some of the
devastated bodies were in sight.

Anyway, my mind may be confused on that...but I think the documentary is airing again
on CBS this Wed. night.

That was one thing I did like the USA Today article. The emphasis on how seeing the people falling
from the North Tower impelled many people to get out of the South Tower in the 16.5 minutes
before the second plane struck.
