When I was at Tennessee Tech from '96 to '99 earning my second master's degree, I did research in this area. Our hope was to recycle the shrimp waste in a saltwater system to make a totally enclosed system. I was actually dealing with oysters that were going to be part of the system. If that system had worked, we could have grown the prawns without the need to dispose of used salt water. I don't know whether the salt water experiments are still being done. The ultimate goal was to use chemical engineering principles to make the best possible formula for the shrimp chow. It was interesting research, but it was also very frustrating when the little buggers died.
