The Post said INS investigators had recommended Danson be prosecuted on a fraud charge. But it cited US officials familiar with the case as saying the Justice Department had been reluctant to prosecute because of fear of embarrassing politicians and Clinton administration officials who earlier supported the woman's cause.

Ask Amy:
Question: I was wondering if you have heard any current information on Adelaide Abankwah, a woman from Ghana. She tried to be granted asylum in the U.S. but was turned down at the end of April. I was wondering if she was going to appeal, or if you knew anything about what happens now. She is afraid to go home because they will mutilate her genitals, or kill her, because she has had premarital sex. Thanks for any information. Lisa
Answer: Thanks for your note to FEMINIST.COM and for your concern for Adelaide Abankwah. Unfortunately, Adelaide is still in prison. The courts are in the process of drafting "the decision"--which we have no idea what that will be or when that will be. There have been several attempts (mostly on the behalf of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Senator Chuck Schumer) to get her released, but none have been successful. Adelaide herself is very unhappy in prison--and therefore, needs all of the moral support that she can get. Equality NOW has been the organization working most closely on this case. They have expertise in the area of human rights and specifically in cases of female genital mutilation. (Their number is #212-586-0906) Thanks again for your concern. Amy

The INS, believing that Danson was not telling the truth, began an investigation of her and assembled what it called overwhelming evidence of fraud. The INS recommended more than a year ago that Danson be prosecuted for fraud, but according to unnamed US officials, the Justice Department is hesitant to pursue the case because of negative publicity. According to other unnamed INS officials, there was pressure from the First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, to reach a resolution favorable to Danson, and the administration as a whole desired her release to end criticism of the government.
There is a real Adelaide Abankwah, who is living in Maryland. Her passport was stolen in Ghana four years ago. She had not come forward before now because she does not have valid status in the US, and feared that she would be deported. She is now cooperating with the INS in hopes that she will be able to legalize her status.
In July 1999, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed the BIA and granted the woman asylum. However, the New York INS office investigated, learned that the real Adelaide Abankwah is an Ghanaian living in Maryland whose passport was stolen in 1996, and is seeking to revoke Danson's immigrant status.
