Answer: Thanks for your note to FEMINIST.COM and for your concern for Adelaide Abankwah. Unfortunately, Adelaide is still in prison. The courts are in the process of drafting "the decision"--which we have no idea what that will be or when that will be. There have been several attempts (mostly on the behalf of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Senator Chuck Schumer) to get her released, but none have been successful. Adelaide herself is very unhappy in prison--and therefore, needs all of the moral support that she can get. Equality NOW has been the organization working most closely on this case. There is a real Adelaide Abankwah, who is living in Maryland. Her passport was stolen in Ghana four years ago. She had not come forward before now because she does not have valid status in the US, and feared that she would be deported. She is now cooperating with the INS in hopes that she will be able to legalize her status.

The Washington Post reported that a Ghanaian hotel worker named Regina Norman Danson won asylum in the US in 1997 as Adelaide Abankwah, allegedly a "queen mother" of her tribe who faced genital mutilation at home. After being turned down by an immigration judge and the BIA, several New York area politicians intervened, and she eventually won asylum after a "Free Adelaide" campaign was launched that involved Hillary Rodham Clinton urging the INS to review her case.

In July 1999, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit reversed the BIA and granted the woman asylum. However, the New York INS office investigated, learned that the real Adelaide Abankwah is an Ghanaian living in Maryland whose passport was stolen in 1996, and is seeking to revoke Danson's immigrant status.
