You've raised a very contrarian point against a very good and optimistic article. I'd like to agree with Mr. Ledeen, and God knows it's nice to see some positive representations of US in the UK papers, but I'm afraid he's too optimistic about the nature of democracy.

Get rid of Sodamn, sure---But don't try to force an Iraqi democratic republic!!! A people often get the leadership they deserve. A completely ignorant populace that believes the WTC didn't fall or was hit by the Jews has neither the WISDOM nor the VIRTUE to rule itself.

The United States education system is also breeding successive generations of mind numbed robots that may just vote in the next dictatorial president (unless Bill C. was the first,) but that's another story.

Machiavelli's benevolent dictator is exactly what the Middle-East needs. That's all it can support.

Imagine if only 10-year olds were left in the US tomorrow. Who would take out the trash or design the bridges? 10-year olds need parents. And ignorant Arabs need parents to paddle their backsides and get them to school. Which is why the Taleban actually ushered in so much order in such a chaotic world. Sure they were an oppressive nightmare, but we probably thought our parents were oppressive when we were kids, too.
