Pitt defends SAT tallying

University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark Nordenberg yesterday defended Pitt's practice of excluding athletes and other special category students when calculating the school's SAT average, and criticized a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story about the practice.

"I believe the coverage has been unfair to a number of people who do their work and do it effectively and do it ethically and do it honestly," Nordenberg said.

A good number of Pitt students fall in the 700-800 SAT range anyway. Wonder just how low the 'special' admission students score.

It’s not really necessary. You can kind of tell when they show up to an interview and can’t speak proper English.

You can't expect them to include minorities in their "real" report of SAT averages. Every elitist liberal knows that minorities can't compete on the same level as the WASP students, that's why we have affirmative discrimination programs.

As a Pitt Alumni, I can tell you unequivacably that athletes and "at risk" students are not treated remotely the same as the rest of the student body in nearly every way... Nothing really new here, just broght to light what everyone on campus always knew.

Note that excluding the scores of the "special category" students who are said to be 10% of the total had the effect of raising the average score by up to 33 points. This indicates an enormous concession to such students in SAT points, and that such students will 1) adversely affect any class in which they participate (the class can only operate at the level of the slowest student), 2) cause grade inflation (minority students must be given at least a C+, or the instructor will face charges of "racism"), and 3) lead to racial unrest on campus, as such students, badly over their head and with high dropout rates, turn bitter and blame their troubles on "racism." The extraordinarily high dropout rates of such students is rarely discussed. It is a human tragedy, as these students might have had some success at an institution more commensurate with their abilities, but all that matters to the university administrators is "meeting the numbers," and thereby assuring the flow of federal money.

Everybody keeps remarking on how smart Harvey Pitt is, but looking at his immense heft--I'd say over 300 pounds--it just points out the inadequacy of SAT and IQ tests in measuring "intelligence." Personal health should be a priority for any intelligent person.

Larry Lindsay also worries me.
