Gorbachev: Only U.N. Can OK War With Iraq
www.newsmax.com ^ | Sept. 10, 2002

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former president of the Soviet Union, told reporters in St. Petersburg Tuesday that any military operation against Iraq may be conducted only with the authorization of the United Nations Security Council.

Gorbachev said, "It should be generally accepted that such an action [must be] necessary for the whole global community and such a decision might only be taken by the U.N. Security Council."

Gorbachev supported the view that U.N. inspectors should return to Iraq.

He also stated that "his opinion was shared by Russian President Vladimir Putin and he supported him in that."

Gorbachev headed the Soviet Union at the end of the Gulf War. At that time he strongly opposed U.S. plans to topple Hussein, and his objections were cited as a key reason U.S. forces curtailed their attacks inside Iraq.

Gorbachev also took a swipe at President Bush's war on terror, claiming that the use of force could not eliminate terrorism, which he said was rooted in poverty.

And why should we listen to a former dictator of a dead empire ???

He's still around? Maybe him and that other failure, Jimmy Carter, could open a pizza chain or something.

Someone needs to tell Gorby that the world has passed him by and that no one cares what he thinks anymore except for loony lefties that still worship him.

Iraq is but a small stepping stone on the way to Mecca and Medina. Let's worry about Gorby and his international hand wringers when we're knocking on the door of the House of Saud.

There are no such limitations written into our Constitution. As an educated man, Gorbachev should be aware of this fact.

Mr. Gorbachev, you will always be related to the Berlin Wall, a symbolic barrier to freedom. I see a new wall from freedom-- Iraq. Rather than hide behind the UN to keep yet another wall from freedom standing, Mr. Gorbachev, QUIT PROPPING UP WALLS and help lead the UN to be a legitimate light of freedom. Otherwise, your desitiny will always be subordinate to the UN's.

Australia? Wonderful surprise. I read that they have large agricultural incentives with Saddam. Thank God Australia put honor above wealth. =]

You might be able to add Russia, China, and India, with conditions. France and Germany are against, probably residual feelings about Al Alamain in one case and who knows what in the other case.
