So much for the competence of the bomb-sniffing dogs.

Perhaps, but another explanation would be that questionable materials had previously been transported in the cars, and the dogs alerted to odors from the residual traces.

Actually, from early this morning on, the authorities said there are a number of substances that could cause the dogs to "hit" on the cars. For example, if fireworks were in the cars at some point — say for the 4th of July. Or if ammunition had been in the cars as some point. They also said that in some jurisdictions, bomb-sniffing dogs sometimes do double-duty to detect drugs. Since these men were medical students and were carrying medical equipment, it is entirely possible that's what the dogs hit on. The dogs can only indicate that they found something they are trained to find. They obviously have no ability to identify what was found. That's where robots and human bomb technicians come it.

Completely agree. Recall that on Wednesday (9/11/02) bomb sniffing dogs alerted on the laptop and a piece of luggage belonging to one of three passengers detained off a flight that was diverted. Authorities blew up the luggage and found nothing suspicious in the remains, and the laptop had traces of common yard fertilizer on it.

Basically these dog searches are worthless - absolutely wortheless. They are 100% wrong every time. It is quite likely that the handlers are simply giving the dog a signal to sit and then says "lookit - the dawg says thar's a bomb!"

Yet evidence from a dog search is admissible in court, despite a 100% failure rate.

Back when I was in the service, the dogs would come through for suprise inspections. They normally "hit" on the lockers that had CANDY in them. Especially candy bars.
