Fax Company Profits From Controversy

SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio woman was recently charged $32.45 for her opinion on a hot topic.

Susan Lyman-Krom (pictured, left) said she decided to respond to a poll from an unsolicited fax whether the phrase "One nation under God" should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance.

"I felt strongly about that question," Lyman-Krom said in an interview with KSAT 12 News.

After writing down her vote, Lyman-Krom faxed her opinion to a 900 number.

According to the fax, calls cost $2.95 a minute. The average fax takes about two minutes in standard mode, the fax stated.

"We figured it would cost $6," Lyman-Krom said.

But when Lyman-Krom received her bill, she said she was shocked to see that she was charged $32.45 for an 11-minute fax by Right2Vote Limited, a Canadian company.

"I think it's a scam," Lyman-Krom added. "I think its a way to hit a nerve with the general public on a heated issue. They are turning right around and collecting all this money on a phone call."

Lyman-Krom said that AT&T told her that the 900 number she called belonged to British Fax Directory.

British Fax Directory is a subsidiary of 21st Century Fax, a London-based company that was fined $1 million by the Federal Communications Commission for junk faxes.

KSAT 12 News tried to contact Right2Vote, but there was no telephone number listed. A phone number to remove a fax machine from the company's list was constantly busy.

All right now, everyone just cool it! We have a new poster here who thinks as we do, for the most part. She had, IMHO, an excellent idea with the knitting project. She's offended by blonde jokes, which she has a right to be, so the rest of us should just cool it. This isn't a liberal bent on disrupting this forum, she is one of us who happens to have posted a comment which is anathema to us. That's her right; so, those of you who were exacerbating the situation (myself included), cut it out.

Now, as to you, RepublicanHippy, please also respect the fact that there are posters here (myself included) who feel that you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. You're one of us, and you're here, and you should stay (I hope you do), but, please realize that being on this forum, you are communicating with some pretty caustic wits, as well as with the cream of the intelligent crop of this country. When you are goaded by someone, goad them back, but do it with wit, not insulting diatribes.

Hmmm... my young blonde daughters always bring home really good blonde jokes for me to use on their old blonde mom...

I guess the fact they excel in maths and sciences makes them a little less sensitive... either that, or they were raised properly... Not sure which yet...

That being said, most of the ribbing (on threads like this) is good-natured, and is not meant to offend... If we were trying to offend you, I'm sure we could come up with something a heck of a lot more offensive than rehashed old jokes... I mean, come on... relax, have fun, and smile... :0)

My daughter, Faith-Hannah is the one whom you hear laughing the loudest at herself, should the situation present itself. Part of that comes from observing my husband and I, and part from her own delightful personality. As for how I would feel upon her hurt in a situation like that, I'd hope that she'd had learned that life ain't always roses and deal accordingly.
