Clinton library donors sought
$35 donation to project will get you a holiday ornament
09/17/2002
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The foundation heading Bill Clinton's presidential library project is offering some holiday cheer to donors willing to pay for it.
In a letter sent last week, the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation offers about 80,000 previous donors the chance to purchase the first in a series of holiday ornaments.
The gold-finished ornament depicting the main building of the Clinton Presidential Center can be picked up for a contribution of $35 or more.
If supplies last, foundation officials say, the ornament may be sold to the general public at the "Holidays in the White House" exhibit set to open Nov. 11 in the Cox Creative Center in Little Rock's River Market district. The show of holiday items from the Clinton administration and other presidencies will run through Jan. 18.
It will be the second preview exhibit since Mr. Clinton moved his presidential records - the largest collection in history - to a heavily secured, 53,000-square-foot, remodeled Oldsmobile dealership in Little Rock.
The ornament offering marks the third such solicitation in a year.
A $35 payment can now get donors the holiday ornament or a tree in the presidential park. Donors can chip in $100 for a granite name plate to adorn the library's entrance dubbed Celebration Circle.
"We believe this ornament will be very popular," foundation president Skip Rutherford said. "We are making it available now so people will have time to place their orders for holiday gift-giving."
The foundation is trying to raise $200 million for the $150 million-plus construction project and an initial endowment. Work on the 28-acre site along the Arkansas River began in June.
In April, the foundation reported it had $20.8 million in assets at the end of 2001 and brought in about $9.9 million in donations. The figures do not include about $145 million that has been pledged so far.
Foundation officials will not say how much money has been collected, only that fund-raising efforts are keeping pace with expectations.
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park will be next to the popular River Market district on the south bank of the river near downtown. The complex, which includes the presidential library and museum, a policy center and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, is set to open in the fall of 2004.

I try to stay out of them.
$35.00 will get you a nice plant of kudzu at the Clinton Library.
Those roots grow deep!
That check for $35 may procure its sender nothing more than a (very expensive) lubricated rubber.
