In an obviously desperate attempt to change the debate in Congress from war authorization to class warfare, Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle attacked the economic record of the Bush administration on Monday. During a 35-minute temper tantrum staged on the Senate floor, Mr. Daschle described the administration's economic policies as "tragic, deplorable, abysmal."

A serious little man...
Besides elevator shoes, he should look into hair implants.
Daschle is apparently a reasonably skilled legislative mechanic. There's no question that he was running rings around Trent Lott when that invertebrate was allegedly in charge of the Senate. However, Daschle is turning out to be an extremely poor politician and a worse electoral strategist. He finds himself the chief spokesman of the Democratic Party pretty much because everyone else is worse. Clinton is over with and tarnished. Gore is a spent force. Gephardt is so lame he even tried that "What did the president know and when did he know it" gambit after 9/11. We haven't heard from him since. Everyone knows that Terry McAuliffe is a walking scandal that just hasn't been indicted yet. The fact is, Daschle is the best the Democrats have... and he's horrible. A poll just came out that says 59% of the people think that Democrats were playing politics with the vote on Iraq. What does that say for how Daschle positioned the Democrats for electoral success? That vote was his deal; he could have come out of there smelling like a rose, or stinking like a skunk. Bush played him like a violin, and now the public associates him and his party with playing games with national security. The Democrats need to send him back into the shop to tinker with the legislative machinery while somebody else does the talking and the thinking. He's had his chance -- Hell, the media tried to make him co-President -- but he's just not the guy. Biden is starting to make noises like he thinks he's the guy, but Biden will never live down that oh-so-sincere delivery of a plagiarized Neil Kinnock speech. As long as he stays on the back benches, people will leave him alone about it, but the minute he tries to stick his head up... it's Whack-A-Mole time. This is the Democratic Party following eight years of Clinton: No successors groomed, nobody on the bench, weak leadership, a sleazebucket running the DNC, and a sales pitch so weak they still think there's mileage in hanging chads. |
Oh BEAST* train crashing LOUDER
Crash on the BEAST train
Come on crashing BEAST train
Yes, BEAST train crashing HARDER
* peace train...cat stevens
That does not mean that Daschle isn't taking the war on terrorism seriously. Oh he is. And he has a lot of questions. His most important question is if terrorists are locked up, can they still vote?
Sounds like a perfectly engineered scenario in favor of "The Return Of The Beast"
"All your base..."
Tommy D was an effective Minority Leader, because his sole job then was to whine and scream. Now, as Majority Leader, he's expected to manage things. And, a bit to my surprise, he's done an incredibly poor job.
