There was a movement started during the Gulf War to reinstate the blue star/gold star flags. It didn't get far, probable because the war was over so fast.
I remember the flags during WW11. I had 3 brothers in the service, all at once. However, I seem to remember 3 separate flags, 1 star each. We were fortunate, all 3 came home.

When I was commissioned in the 1970's, my parents were given a blue star sticker to put in their window by, I believe, the local American Legion post. They got another when my brother joined the Marines a few years later. I don't think that the practice ever died out, it was just sporadic.
