Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

EFE - 9/26/2002

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

Vicente Fox delivered an ultimatum

Fox has unprecedented control over a US president. You have to wonder why he is calling all the shots here.

Mrs. Bush,

Ask your husband to read his Oath of Office again!

I think it is disgusting that the Democrat and the Republican politicians are catering to illegal alien, our illegal voters. These people should not even be in our borders. The current situation has us paying for their medical care, housing, and education. How can anyone suggest that we are fighting the war on terrorism when our borders are wide open? How can Americans believe that our political or justice system is functioning as intended when illegals are being catered to instead of arrested and removed from our country?

Just a side note. Did you know that illegal aliens that are captured by the Border Patrol are not "officially" deported. They are photographed, fingerprinted and returned to the border. Only after being captured 10 to 15 times are they brought before a judge and "officially " deported. What other criminal can commit a crime 10 to 15 times and be released rather than charged and sentenced? Where is the fear of committing a crime that you and I have. We would be arrested, charged and tried immediately. I think this allows for the influx of a culture into America that is based on deceit and lack of respect for our laws.

How can we expect a safer country to be formed under these circumstances?

How sly. Remember soon after the election, when Laura Bush went on TV and said she supported Roe vs Wade? Now she goes to Mexico City and talks about the special sensitivity she and her husband feel for the US Hispanic community.

I guess those of us who believe it's only immigration if it's legal must be having an impact...GWB has to try to appease his Mexican buddies with soothing words from his wife.

Lady Agnes of Dunbar, what shall we do?

Personally, I have shrugged. I don't create wealth anymore because I refuse to pay the taxes and subsidize my own destruction. Most can not or will not do that.

I was proving their argument 'we're a nation of immigrants' to be the bovine excrement it is. Every nation is, at some point, a natin of immigrants. That's no excuse to allow unfettered and continued immigration to harm those already there. I'm tired of paying more taxes. There's almost 8% unemployment in my area already. We can't give jobs to the people already HERE. Why do we need immigration? So we can have lower wages and more unemployed people?

I have shrugged also. It's like being in quicksand...the more you struggle, the faster you're sucked under. The more you make, the faster it's taxed away and used to ultimately harm you...*sigh*.

The borders need to be lined with mines not water towers and safety beacon lights. You want in here, do it legally.

Just because she went to Mexico on her honeymoon doesn't mean the rest of us deserve to be screwed.

I am so disappointed that the highest majority of Americans want a visable solution to the flow of illegals, but our leaders are not listening. In fact, the closer to elections, the more they seem to pander.

Cheer up Aggie, after a while there will be no one left in Mexico and we can take it over. :)

If you've got another twenty years to wait.

You are correct. The Garden of Eden was not a "nation of immigrants". Everywhere else since has been.

I love Mexico, I love Mexicans in general. I have lived there, I expect to live there again.

That has nothing to do with immigration policy.

Immigration policy must serve the interests of the citizens. It should never be a tool for managing wage rates, or managing voting patterns, or managing the ethnic mix.

Immigration rates must be set at a figure which can be easily assimilated. I would suggest the current rates are about 10 times that figure, if you include both legal and illegal entries. Which you must do.

Immigration should be limited to family members of citizens, and a few specialists. Thats it.

I would suggest a several year moratorium on immigration, except by exception.

I support Tancredo, and I am calling for immediate National Guard patrols along the border, particularly the rural areas where #1 illegals are dying and #2 Mexican soldiers are crossing and firing on Border Patrol agents.

Just look at the new antibiotic-resistant strain of TB that is being brought north from Mexico. These people, largely HIV carriers, cannot finish a course of government-supplied antibiotics to effectively kill the bacteria.

I gotta defend the 1st lady here. She responded to a question asked of her at what can only be described as a ladies auxilliary meeting in Mexico.

She answered in a neutral and non-controversial way so as not to create a political problem.

Essentially said nothing.

Had she said something on either side of this issue, your concerns would be valid as to a non elected person making policy.

I like Laura Bush. I am happy that she has brought, for the frst time in the past 10 years, some class and dignity to the White House as First Lady.

But on this particular subject, I am done with discussing it. I am not going to compromise. I will shout at the top of my lungs that immigration has to slow, and illegal immigration has to stop.

This country is going to hell in a handbasket because of uncontrolled immigration and massive illegal immigration. Soon enough, it will be time for us to take this country back. If we cannot do it with our legal representatives, then we will have to do it ourselves. We had better all be ready to do it ourselves, because I see very little hope on the horizon that our representatives have the stomach for it.

I'm tired of having to speak Spanish just to get a stinking burger in McD's. And I live in No. VA.

It's nice to know that other people in this area have the same gripes. At first I didn't have a problem with it (came here in '99), but now I need to get the hell out of here! There are places I don't patronize any more because of the communication and cultural differences.

My neighborhood (in NE NJ) has gone completely to hell in the past 3-4 years. If communication problems in McD's were all we had I'd still be fine. The latest batch of illegals pee on the sidewalk in broad open daylight & if you say something you're labeled racist!
