President Bush began the day meeting with congressional leaders regarding Iraq. Accompanied by Republicans and Democrats from the House, Bush later made a statement to the media regarding the immediate need for a resolution. The President also reiterated his stance on corporate responsibility during a speech at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Bush later headed back to Texas to attend a political fundraiser for Attorney General John Cornyn in Houston. Meanwhile, First Lady Laura Bush continued her trip in Mexico City. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!
While short on specifics, it was definitely a policy statement. From the article:
Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."
There are plenty of ways to say pleasant things about Mexico without saying what Mrs. Bush did above. Her comment was about policy.
Laura Bush is a political wife. Political wives are... political.
In addition to being savvy in her own right, Laura also has the advantage of advice from a mother-in-law who, as the the wife of one President and the mother of another, has a thing or two to say about being a political wife.
This was the first meeting between either the President or the First Lady since Vicente Fox's ballyhooed "snub" of President Bush last month. Dubya doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who'd send his wife out to deal with someone with whom he was unhappy. That Laura's statements were just the thing Vicente Fox needed to hear and to show to the Mexican Congress was not accidental. Her comments while vague, were policy-oriented, and certainly cleared beforehand by the White House.
If Bush was really mad at Fox, it wouldn't have gone this way.
What you may not be aware of is that these ladies have responded thoughtfully to flags of mine on Illegal Alien threads in the past, and have been treated rudely just because they post on this thread and aren't as adamant about the issue as some of us are. This has happened even though each one of them agrees that Illegal immigration is a problem that hasn't been sufficiently addressed.
It's understandable that they would be wary.
You solution is to revamp the INS,if not get rid of it and start over .. round all the illegals and ship them out and better control of our borders
Which I don't really have a problem with .. but the ACLU nit wits will be tying up the courts for years screaming civil rights abuses and we will still continue to have a problem with the illegals if not a worse one
The thread alone .. no it wasn't
But the posters that post do this
Wow! Good job, Gretchen! :-D
First, I don't favor rounding up all Illegals, that would take too much manpower. I want to do a quick few hundred thousand, and many of the rest will get the hint and leave. That would be just one aspect of a comprehensive solution.
The ACLU would definitely be an obstacle, but they could only tie up individual cases. The Constitution specifically entrusts the FedGov to provide for our common defense and to promote the general welfare, and grants to Congress powers over immigration and naturalization. Any ACLU Constitutional challenges would fall rather quickly, and a few hundred thousand deportatees-in-waiting would overwhelm their ability to clog the system on a case-by-case basis.
But even if it's worse than I expect, that outcome would be more discouraging to potential Illegals than the current do-nothing, bipartisan status quo, or any Amnesty.
For good reason!!!
Giving you everything you've said.....that Laura is politically savvy, intelligent, and coached by a pro.....Barbara.....I still don't see how this statement, unless you are looking for trouble, is so dark and foreboding. "Refocusing" can mean a number of things, and believing, as I do, that this President will always put the safety of Americans over free trade, I think the "refocusing" post 9/11 will mean tightening, not loosening immigration.
You know that I am not happy with the present situation, nor the lack of clamping down on the borders, granting of Visas, etc.....but using the First Lady's statement as a springboard for all kinds of vitriol against her and the President was, IMO, intolerable. And in spite of your good intentions, Sabertooth, you're not going to be able to tame the ugly monsters that hang out on immigration threads, and those of us who respect our President, will not deliberately expose ourselves through the garbage tossed about on them.
btw, I was impressed with Tancredo (as I have been with Michelle Malkin....wow! she's sharp!)....I wish O'Reilly had given him enough time to refute the Torres' lies.
(Have I helped 'hijack' our wonderful thread about a wonderful President? I hope not!)
I think you're reading what you want to read into that.
Regardless of what side you come down on, something HAS to be done and to get done, it has to be talked about.
Her comment was NOT about policy; if you persist in that argument, you just look myopic.
When W speaks I will listen and assess at that time. I don't think the First Lady said anything in terms of policy importance. Reading anything more into her comments is nonsense.
Exactly........and a whole lot of nonsense was going on there.
Mo1, can you just imagine the reaction of shock if our beautiful, serene First Lady made a statement of that nature!
What a hilarious thought!!
Well it would get her in the papers .. LOL
Help! Help! I'm being baited.
"Lovely beaches," "great food," "beautiful children," etc. are examples of charming pleasantries, and all are appropriately gracious ways of returning the hospitality of one's host.
Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration," is an example of a light generalization about policy, intended for Mexican consumption.
The new Century's finest leader is coming to my home state of Arizona today. Really looking forward to the Daily Dose later today. There's gonna be some gorgeous photo ops when he speaks at the fairgrounds near Flagstaff this afternoon with the beautiful pine-covered mountain peaks as a backdrop! Can't afford that $700/plate dinner in downtown Phoenix tonight - :( - BUT, the radio station will cover his speech and it should be great!
I would neither expect nor desire that Mrs. Bush say any such thing.
I would prefer that she had left the subject of "immigration" (it has a far different meaning in Mexico) alone altogether.
Oh sweetie .. lighten up .. it was just my poor attempt at humor
I'm not saying we should ignore the immigration issue .. I'm just saying I wouldn't read to much into that comment and beside it is the President's comments we should listen to
