Marines: Someone cut lines of jumpers' chutes

CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina (AP) -- Suspension lines on 13 parachutes were cut before a training exercise last month, forcing three jumpers to use their reserve chutes, the Marine Corps said Tuesday.

The tampering was discovered September 21 when five Marines jumped from a C-17 aircraft during heavy equipment parachute training at Camp Lejeune.

Last time I checked (15 years ago) chutes were traceable back to the rigger, the inspector and so forth.

Also, last time I checked very few Marines are on jump status. Force Recon and para rescue types. Most of those guys don't jump static lines though.

Yep, and that are loads of inspections but it sounds like someone rally knew the system.

That's my bet too.

I'm not a Marine, but I expect that all the chutes were packed by active duty servicemen. That precludes illegal immigrants.
