Va. Shooting 'Similar' To Maryland Shooting Spree

Investigators Still Searching For White Truck

POSTED: 8:11 a.m. EDT October 4, 2002
UPDATED: 4:50 p.m. EDT October 4, 2002

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- A woman was shot outside a store near Fredericksburg, Va., Friday afternoon, in an incident with similarities to the shootings in Montgomery County, Md.

Spotsylvania County police say the woman was loading packages into her car about 2:30 p.m. at a Michaels crafts store outside Spotsylvania Mall when she was shot in the back. There was no official word on her condition, but witnesses say she was breathing and speaking.

The shot apparently was fired from a distance. The first incident in the Maryland shooting spree was a shot fired through the window of a Michaels store.

Police are not saying there's a connection between Friday afternoon's incident and the Maryland shootings. They say it's too soon to draw any conclusions.

However, Montgomery County police chief Charles Moose says he will send his investigators to Virginia to see if there is a connection to the shootings in his county.

Police in Virginia say weapon was not high-powered rifle-

(Fredericksburg-AP) -- Police say the weapon that wounded a woman outside a mall near Fredericksburg, Virginia, does NOT appear to have been a high-powered rifle like the one involved in a series of shootings in Montgomery County.

Spotsylvania County Police Captain Michael Timm says a woman was shot in the lower back as she loaded packages into her car.

Timm says the bullet passed through the woman's body, and police are looking for it.

No official word on the woman's condition.

The shooting occurred outside a Michaels crafts store at Spotsylvania Mall. The first incident in the Montgomery shootings was a shot fired through the window of a Michaels store.

Montgomery County police are sending investigators to the scene.

I recall reading an article not too long ago on FR about the various training of the terrorists. One of the things they were training to do was to shoot innocent people at random just like what is happening. Does anyone else remember this article?

"Yesterday's shooting of five people in Maryland have area residents concerened, and some say they will stay indoors."

Yes! Cower indoors! And keep voting Democrats into office so they can pass more victim disarmament laws! Enjoy the new U.S.S.A.!

I just heard similar on ABC radio NYC. Reportedly, law enforcement does NOT consider this latest shooting to be related because "the shooter used a different firearm."

OK, so a random civilian shooting in a parking lot about an hour away and 2 days later is NOT RELATED to 6 other random civilian shootings (one of which was, remarkably, in a parking lot of a different store in the same chain) simply because a different gun was used. Does this seem absurd to anyone else but me?

Article says she was shot in the lower back - Sounds like a less skilled shooter.

Question re "high powered" - The weapons that the police displayed at their press conference today as samples included an AR-15 and a long gun with scope. Are these both "high powered"?
